Joe Manganiello: ‘True Blood workouts are sheer pain’ via digitalspy.com
Joe Manganiello has admitted that he began intense workout sessions when cast as True Blood werewolf Alcide Herveaux.
The actor will reprise his role as part of the main cast of the HBO show’s fourth season, which begins in the US later this month. Speaking to July’s issue of Men’s Health, self-confessed comic book obsessive Manganiello revealed why he was determined to look the part.
“I have to look this way,” he told the magazine. “Because somewhere there’s a kid just like I was, who looks at the werewolf in the comic book, then looks up at the screen. And I want him to say, ‘Wow! That’s right, that’s what it looks like’.”
Describiing his training sessions as “sheer pain” and an “hour of brutality”, Manganiello recalled how he had decided not to pursue a professional sports career.
“When I was a kid, playing sports in high school and college, there were a lot of other kids who started doing steroids,” he said. “It was something that factored into me not pursuing professional sports.
“For me, it’s really important that I see what I can do naturally. If it means I have to sleep more, take better care of myself and diet more carefully, so be it.”
It may be hard work but it sure pays off because mmm mmm does he look fine…

“There’s just something about the first vampire that you get the hots for,” says True Blood star Marshall Allman, about his character Tommy Mickens’ crush on baby vamp Jessica (Deborah Ann Woll).
Sam Merlotte’s (Sam Trammell) shapeshifter sibling tells us that Tommy’s feelings will continue to affect his character in season four, saying, “He still has a big crush on Jessica. But how that plays out…I don’t know, but Tommy will forever—that’s his first crush. She’s hot. Superhot vampire. He could meet a new hot person, but there’s just something about that first vampire that you get the hots for.” Well said, young pup.
Plus, what did Marshall reveal about where things stand between Tommy and Sam after that whole season-three finale shooting incident?
Allman tells us, “Sam is a bastard. And he shot me. Or he missed. Or he shot me and I lived…What we know is that he shot at me, and where the bullet landed, we have yet to [learn]. But I’m not dead.”
So what does that mean for season four? “Where we pick up [in the season premiere] is my brother just shot at me,” says Allman. “We’re kind of a dysfunctional family. It’s not exactly like he just threw a dish or broke something—he shot at his brother. It’s kind of like, are we going to ever be a happy family? Are we ever going to get along?” Allman hopes they do work it out because, in his words, “[Tommy] needs a little tender loving care…He basically had, like, Michael Vick for a dad.”
