Alexander Skarsgard talks about why Swedes are so liberal via Hollywoodnews.com
True Blood star Alexander Skarsgård chats with filmmaker and fellow Swede Jonas Åkerlund about why Swedes are so liberal regarding their sexuality, the American media’s obsession with nudity, and the how the his progressive HBO series is changing attitudes in the U.S.
Skarsgård recognizes that even True Blood, considered envelope-pushing in America, remains “very tame, by Swedish standards.” He tells OUT “…that always strikes me as weird because parents in the States freak out if their kids see a nipple or a butt cheek, but, at the same time, they’re OK with their kids watching people bash each other’s heads in with baseball bats. In interviews in the U.S. all people want to talk about is nudity…. If it makes sense as a scene, I’ll do it. I don’t even think about it.”
Skarsgård also applauds True Blood creator Alan Ball for challenging America’s attitudes. “Yeah, well, we’ve really come a long way. What’s interesting is when you have a character like Lafayette, who’s black and gay, if you can find someone – some guy who doesn’t know any gay people or black people, who may have all these prejudices – if that guy watches the show and thinks, I really like this character, then you’ve done something pretty good.”
Charlaine Harris to Write Graphic Novel Series via USA Today
Charlaine Harris’s mega hit series about Louisiana barmaid Sookie Stackhouse will end with book 13 which will be released in May 2013. (HBO’s True Bloodis based on the series.)
But Harris is already busy with a followup new project, an original graphic novel trilogy. The first book, Cemetery Girl, will be published by Ace Books in 2013. The trilogy is a collaboration between Harris, dark fantasy writer Christopher Golden, and illustrator Don Kramer. Cemetery Girl will combine fantasy and paranormal mystery to tell the story of a teenaged girl with amnesia who has grown up living alone in amid the gravestones.
As the series unfolds, the truth of who the girl is and how she came to be there will be gradually revealed both to the reader and to the character herself. It will be Harris’s first venture into the world of graphic novels.
In a press release from her publisher, Harris said “I’d had the bones of the plot for Cemetery Girl in my head for a year when Chris suggested I re-imagine it as a graphic novel. Suddenly, the project made a lot more sense. Since Chris has more experience in the graphic novel field that I do, we agreed to team up for my first-ever collaboration. This is an exciting venture for both of us.” On May 1, 2012, Ace will release the Deadlocked, the next book in Harris’s Sookie Stackhouse series.
Harris has had numerous books in the top 50 of USA TODAY’s Best-Selling Books list. The most recent, The Sookie Stackhouse Companion, entered the list at No. 44 on Sept. 8.
