When they were kids, Titan watched Emilee from the shadows.  He watched as his best friend, Bones, had his way with her.  Until things got too real for Bones and he stepped away.

Now, years later, Emilee has been living in Chicago.   The death of her father has brought her back to Vegas.  She’s in trouble.  Her father has left everything to his shady business partner, George.  Her mom is dying and needs around-the-clock care and George will only pay for it, if Emilee surrenders her body to him whenever he demands it.

Emilee needs saving and Titan and Bones are the only ones that can help.

There comes a time in every King’s life where they need to take a Queen.  It’s time for Titan to claim his, whether Emilee knows it or not.  She belongs to him and soon everyone will be aware of that little fact.

This was another enjoyable read from Shantel Tessier.  This one was a bit harsher than the previous book, Code of Silence.  It was more in line of what I expected from Tessier.

Emilee wanted to be a strong independent character, but she seemed to fail at that more often than not.  Everyone kept making her the victim and I was surprised with how willing she was to sell her body.  To George.  Titan.  To any strange man when she took a job as a Queen.  Although Titan wouldn’t allow those strange men to do much, when it came to her.  She’s his after all, even if she didn’t know it yet.

Titan fell into feelings and wasn’t sure how to handle it.  He wanted Emilee to be his.  However, he couldn’t bring himself to quit being a hard ass to clue her into those feelings, even pushing her away at times in cruel fashion.

“I don’t know why her words piss me off, but they do. Maybe because I expected her to see me differently. Maybe I expected her to understand the connection between the three of us. Either way, stepping into her, I say the first thing that comes to my mind. “You didn’t think you were special, did you?”

And just like that, I fucked everything up.”

I found it strange that Emilee had history with Bones, but her love interest was with Titan instead.  Bones’s best friend.  In all honesty, it felt like they should have been a throuple instead.  Bones does have a book later in the series, so I have to assume that he will eventually have his own woman and get past his commitment issues.  I’ll be curious to see how it all plays out.

I like this series so far, but I have found that the books seem so short after reading the L.O.R.D.S. series, which books are about twice the size.  The Dark Kingdom novels just seem to end so suddenly and I always wish to see more of the couples’ happily ever after.  One good thing is that the guys are so close, and the girls too that you constantly see scenes with couples of the past and future.
