This book picks up where the previous installment, The Scam left off. Kate and Nick are still in Hawaii, when Nick gets kidnapped by a band of outlaws. The Road Runners have made their living from smash and grab robberies, but they need a little finesse for the heist they have planned. They need to break into a vault that is so secure that nobody has ever attempted to rob it. They need the best in the business. They need Nicolas Fox.
Kate quickly discovers what happened to Nick and is hot on his trail. He’s government property after all and he needs to be recovered. She decides not to tell her boss, so he can’t tell her not to go after Nick.
Nick successfully breaks into the vault that was thought to be impossible to get into. Unfortunately, he is double-crossed by the Road Runners. He is left behind, after being knocked out, to take the fall. Luckily Kate finds him just in time. However, the police are quickly approaching and Kate is forced to arrest him.
Kate and her dad quickly hatch a plan to break Nick out of prison. They also discover that diamonds aren’t the only things Nick helped the Road Runners steal. A deadly virus was also taken, one that the leader of the Road Runners, Dragan Kovic, plans to unleash on Los Angeles. Nick and Kate must find a way to infiltrate the Road Runners and get the virus back before it’s too late.
It’s been a hot minute since I read this series. Checks notes. It’s been over EIGHT YEARS since I read The Scam. Wow. I’ve always enjoyed this series as well. I used to get the books mailed to me from the publisher though, so I guess that’s what happens when you get booted off the mailing list. I had to give myself a bit of a refresh on this series before I could start.
I really enjoyed observing Nick work. It was fun ‘watching’ him figure out how to break into the unbreakable safe. Watching him set up his con, later, was less enjoyable for me. It did not help that most of the locations in this book were written in other languages. So, things were a bit dull until he set his plan into motion. And, then threw a wrench in his own plan, completely changing the game. There is never a dull moment with Nicolas Fox around, that’s for sure. Nick and Kate had to work together along with their usual supporting cast to take the bad guy out and get themselves out alive.
Also, almost every book in this series I speculate that Nick and Kate will finally become involved, and then it doesn’t happen. However, it finally happened in this book. Yay! Although it was barely touched on, sadly. The authors gave us just enough to let us know it happened, and that was about it. I would honestly love to see more of their budding relationship as it develops.
I found the ending of this book to be rather sudden. Too sudden. The ending was quite the letdown, if I’m being honest. The day is saved, the Toblerones make their obligatory appearance and then we’re out. It would have been a nice time to expand on what is going on between Nick and Kate. The opportunity was missed.
This is the last of the series that is co-written by Lee Goldberg and I’m curious to see if there will be a noticeable difference in the next installment. I guess I better not wait another eight years to find out.
