Maddy was enjoying life. She was finally running her own bar with the help of her friend, Abi, when it all went to hell. A group of shifters had come in, one had even been flirting with her, or so she thought. They left without issue, but came back to the bar as she was closing up and attacked her. They kept telling her that she shouldn’t exist and they were determined to end her existence that very night.
Nico, alpha of the Lorenzo pack, was out with his friends, when one of them just had to stop in for a bite to eat at this bar he knew. Nico figured the bar was closed, but humored him anyway. When they arrived, the door was ajar and the place was a mess. However, the thing that was most jarring to Nico was the smell of his injured mate. He couldn’t fight the pull to go to her and help. But how could she be his mate? She’s human.
Nico took Maddy to their healer and put her under the pack’s protection. However, Javi’s pack kept trying to kill her. But why? Protecting Maddy will very likely endanger Nico’s family and pack, but he can’t fight the pull to help her. And, what they discover will change everything and bring the shifters deep dark past to light. Can Nico keep his mate safe or is he destined to lose her when he’s only just found her?
This book started out okay, but I felt it was incredibly too long. It seemed to drag on forever, and I really felt the author could have condensed it to a book half its size. It made me lose interest and it took about a month for me to slog through it.
There are some decent parts to the book, I even laughed a few times, and the storyline was interesting. The pace was unbearable though. It’s hard to keep reading with nothing seems to be happening. Just one long boring conversation after another and the same things happening again and again. It reminded me a lot of the movie Groundhog’s Day, which I have never been able to finish, by the way. I wanted to like the book, I truly did, it was just too long-winded for my liking. So much so that I don’t think I could even attempt the rest of the series.
