Michael Vey: The Prisoner of Cell 25 by Richard Paul Evans is a Young Adult novel that is was just released August 9, 2011. It at first seems too easy of a read for adults, but notice I used the word “seems”. Once the story of this Tourette Syndrome afflicted young boy starts to unfold, you will be surprised at how much it feels like an X-Men trilogy. It will truly blow you away.
Michael Vey is just like every other 14 year old boy. He gets bullied in high school, he has one geeky friend and a mad crush on one of the cutest girls at school. Not only his luck, but his life soon changes after being bullied one too many times and exhibits special electrical powers that stop the bullies in their tracks.
Once his best friend Ostin Liss and cheerleader Taylor Ridley find out Michael’s secret, they start a special club and find out there are other kids with special electrical powers. In their search to find the other children, Michael’s mother is kidnapped and the newly formed group set out across the West Coast to find her.
Mad scientists, murder and mayhem threaten Michael and his friends at every turn making for a highly suspenseful journey.
Once you become engrossed in the story it is hard to put down. You will be delighted to know this is but the first novel in a seven book series by Evans that is sure to gain a huge following. I would be very surprised if this story wasn’t optioned in the future for a major motion picture, it’s that good.
It has loads of action and death defying choices of courage to hook you right in and make you really care for the characters. Michael Vey is the new YA superhero that will appeal to young and old alike.
I simply cannot wait for the follow up titled “Michael Vey: Rise of the Electroclan”. Seeing as The Prisoner of Cell 25 is has just been released, we’ll have to (sadly) wait a while.
