Summary

Edward and Bella discussed their time in Florida. Bella recounted when her mother made some very close judgments about Edward and Bella. She was concerned that they were too serious. Bella turned the tables and told Renee she was being paranoid, but it still shook Bella how perceptive her seemingly-daft mother had been. When they arrived home, Charlie was in high spirits and immediately told Bella to call Jacob because he was worried about her. Bella could sense Edward’s tension. The phone rang, it was Jacob. Bella had flashes of memories with Jacob and was relieved to finally hear his voice. Jacob asked Bella if she was going to school, she said yes, then he abruptly ended the conversation. Bella started Charlie’s meal contemplating why Jacob wanted to know if she was going to school. She realized that Jacob thought that Bella was taken away that weekend by Edward to be changed. The next day on the way to school, Edward asked Bella to stay in the car, but she asked why. In the parking lot, Jacob was standing next to his motorcycle. Edward told her that she was mistaken about why Jacob wanted to know if she was at school, he wanted a place with witnesses. Edward told Jacob that he was fair warned (reading his thoughts). Bella questioned this and Jacob asked why Edward didn’t tell her that over the weekend the Cullen’s and wolves were chasing Victoria, the lines of territory got blurred and Emmett and Paul almost killed each other. Bella understood why Edward took her away that weekend, Alice saw Victoria in her vision last week at lunch. Edward told Jacob that he did not want Bella to be upset, that is why he didn’t tell her. Jacob was trying to woo Bella to his side so he told her that they could hang out if she came to La Push. Bella was unsure of how to act in front of both of them at that point. Mr. Greene came outside and told Jacob to leave, and he did. Edward and Bella passed notes in class regarding Victoria. She asked for the whole story and wanted to be included in the planning next time. Edward agreed.

I’d forgotten how much this face bothered me. Though I’d gotten to know Sam pretty well before the Cullens had come back – to like him, even – I’d never been able to completely shake the resentment I felt when Jacob mimicked Sam’s expression. It was a stranger’s face. He wasn’t my Jacob when he wore it.

‘Welcome back, Bella,” he said, grinning. And the way he said the words made it sound like welcome home.

“Normal humans runaway from monsters, Bella. And I never claimed to be normal. Just human.”
