AVATAR: THE REAL-LIFE SCIENCE BEHIND THE FANTASY
Floating mountains? Glowing plants? They’re in ‘Avatar,’ and they’re not beyond the realm of scientific possibility.
The producer of “Avatar” is fond of saying that writer and director James Cameron does not write science fiction, he writes science fact.
From the reclining, cup-holdered seat of a local multiplex, that seems a generous statement. Neither mountains floating in midair or fauna that lights up like the Las Vegas Strip at night would seem to have the slightest foundation in reality.
And yet they do.
To be sure, Mr. Cameron likes to bring his fair share of Hollywood to the cosmos, painting his scenes with the brush of fantasy. But beneath some of his most outlandish visions is often a kernel of scientific possibility.

TOP 10 SCIENCE FICTION FILMS OF 2009
This year was a pretty good year for Scifi films and despite some disappointments I must admit that 2009 was a pretty good year for scifi film fans young and old with a nice mix of films to suit all tastes.
Two films that did not make my list because they did not play anywhere near me were The Road and Moon. Both films looked truly fantastic and were high on my list to watch but alas the distributors released the film very poorly so only the critics and a select group of film fans got to see both films. I am sure that they both would have made my top list if I had a chance to see them.
So with that said and done here are the 10 Best Scifi Films of 2009 as I see it.
Mutant Chronicles: Straight up in the #10 spot we have Mutant Chronicles. I was really looking forward to this film because of its premise and overall visual look. I am a big fan of films scifi or otherwise that take chances on bluescreen. It reminded me of a lower budget 300 and really when can you go wrong when you mix war, famine, the end of the human race and mutants!

IRON MAN WILL KICK YOUR ASS, THOR WILL SURPRISE YOU, AND DOCTOR WHO MAY BE TOTALLY OUT OF LEFT FIELD
Today we hear from Joe Quesada on Thor andIron Man 2. There’s a crazy new Doctor Who rumor and wild new clip. And True Blood’s werewolf reveals all. Also, spoilers for Book of Eli, Legion, and Lost.
Iron Man 2
Marvel’s Joe Quesada has seen a rough cut of the movie, and he’s unsurprisingly effusive about the film, especially the role of War Machine:
“[Don] Cheadle is one of the greatest living American actors, what do you expect?” said Quesada of the actor playing War Machine’s alter ego, James “Rhodey” Rhodes, in the blockbuster sequel. “I think fans are going to love it – especially fans of War Machine – and he does kick some major ass.”

Rosencrantz & Guildenstern (could they have come up with a more complicated name to type, geeesh) looks delightfully funny. It’s just been added to my must-see list. Will you be seeing it?
It is quite fascinating to hear about Cameron’s vision and ideas that went into making this film. What are your thoughts?
What were your top 10 Sci-Fi flicks of 2009 and which films are you most looking forward to in 2010?
Hey David.
Thanks for your input. We'd love to review your book, do an interview with you or host a contest giving away your book – or all 3. Please contact us at dawn@openbooksociety.com
I was interested to read Jo Quesada's comments re the Iron Man2 and Thor movies.
I've been a fan of both these Marvel icons since they were first created and indeed read norse mythology ever before Marvel Thor came about.
The Thor movie seems to have been a long time coming.
After over 50 years of reading Marvel comics and science fiction books I finally managed to give something back to the science fiction genre with two publications in 2009:
