GERARD BULTER AND ANTOINE FUQUA TEAM UP FOR SCI-FI ‘AFTERBURN’

Gerard Butler and Antoine Fuqua may not have much in common on the surface, but there’s one thing that links them inextricably right now: they’re both former flavors-of-the-months who’ve had a series of recent disappointments. Butler looked like he could be the next big action star after “300,” but a series of flops, from “Nim’s Island” and “RocknRolla” to “Gamer” and the unfeasibly awful “Law Abiding Citizen,” has seen his stock fall in a big way.

Fuqua, meanwhile, was a hot property after “Training Day,” but none of his films since, from Bruce Willis war flick “Tears of the Sun” and the disastrous “King Arthur” to this year’s “Brooklyn’s Finest,” have quite connected, and he’s had a number of projects fall apart from beneath him, most notably an early version of “American Gangster,” eventually filmed by Ridley Scott.

DIRECTOR HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS DAVID YATES INTERVIEW

With Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1 getting released in a few days, Warner Bros. held a big press junket this past weekend in London and I got to fly across the pond to attend.

During the intimate roundtable interview, Yates talked about the premiere the night before, explains why they decided to break up the last book into two installments, talked about why they shelved 3D at the last second and confirmed Part 2 will definitely be in 3D.

He also talked about the big battle at Hogwarts in Part 2, filming on location and how the actors loved it, and says he has no idea what he’ll be directing after Potter because he hasn’t had the time to read any scripts.

DARK MOON SCRIPT REVIEW

Paranormal Activity’s rags-to-riches success story has sparked a wildfire of “found footage” pick-ups in Hollywood.  However, with PA, Blair Witch Project, and The Last Exorcism already mining the scares, screenwriters and filmmakers are applying the gimmick to other genres.  Norwegian thriller The Troll Hunter is a fun ride through a fantasy reality and Oren Peli, who directed the original PA, is bringing the formula into sci-fi with Area 51 next year.

In the past month, two similar sci-fi specs have been snatched up, each utilizing the “found footage” style to weave a story about a covert mission to the Moon.

Gerard Butler’s choice in movie roles since ‘300’ hasn’t been the greatest. I’m glad he’ll head into more serious territory next year. He needs to be taken seriously. Will Afterburn help at all? I think not. It sounds like another run of the mill action flick. Just what we need. What do you think? Another thing…is it me, or does the baby holding, gun-wielding guy in the center of Gerard and Antoine look like Ben Stiller?

How do you feel about more movies like Blair Witch and Paranormal Activity coming to the big screen? Do you think our love affair for reality shows has anything to do with it?
