Robert Downey Jr. could be the next man behind the curtain.
Downey is in talks with the producers of Disney’s planned Wizard of Oz prequel to star as the wizard, according to the Los Angeles Times.
Breaking nerd news: Joss Whedon tapped to direct Avengers movie
The script for the project, tentatively titled The Great and Powerful, is based on parts of the L. Frank Baum books in which the wizard was a charlatan in Kansas before arriving in Oz.
Two directors being considered for the project are Sam Mendes (American Beauty) and Adam Shankman (Hairspray and Bedtime Stories), and the film could begin shooting as early as next spring, according to the L.A. Times.

The latest casting news regarding upcoming sci-fi flick I Am Number Four comes in the form of Teresa Palmer, star of the upcoming, surprisingly good looking, Nic Cage/Jay Baruchel effects extravaganza The Sorcerer’s Apprentice as well as the Gibsonless Mad Max reboot Fury Road. Palmer joins Alex Pettyfer (Stormbreaker) in the Dreamworks Pictures adaptation of the young adult novel by James Frey and Jobie Hughes.
The movie is to be directed by DJ Caruso, of Disturbia/Eagle Eye/Shia LaBeouf team-up fame, and is produced by Steven Spielberg and Michael Bay. Al Gough and Miles Millar, scribes of the hit CW show Smallville, wrote the screenplay, and it would seem like familiar territory for them, being astory about teenage alien who escaped their dying homeworld. Their planet was destroyed by big, bad, evil people, who are now hunting down the kids on Earth.
