MOVIE NEWS FOR APRIL 13TH: BEST SUPERHERO MOVIES, PRINCE OF PERSIA AND MUCH MORE

10 BEST SUPERHERO MOVIES EVER

Source: acomicbookblog.com

Superhero movies are definitely in the mainstream these days. Since 1998’s Blade, the comic book genre has flourished to the point where they are now award winning masterpieces that you can take your girlfriend to. In honor of 2010’s Kick Ass, The Losers, Iron Man 2, Jonah Hex, Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World, The Green Hornet and Dead of Night (based on Dark Horse Comics’ Dylan Dog series), I bring you the list of Top 10 Best Superhero Movies Ever.

As the name implies, these are specifically superhero movies and not simply comic book movies. So, you won’t find Ghost World, Road to Perdition, A History of Violence, Sin City, or American Spendor on this list. Those are all fine examples of how comics books can be adapted to the big screen, but superheroes make for a much tougher assignment. They build such a history with their readers that condensing it down to 2 hours can create such high expectations with hardcore fans that finding the balance between attracting the general population and pleasing the longtime fans can often become difficult and frustrating.

HOW THOR BREAKS DOWN RACIAL BARRIERS IN ASGARD

Source: scifiwire.com

Kenneth Branagh’s Thor movie takes the idea of color-blind casting to a new level: Idris Elba, the charismatic British actor best known as Stringer Bell in HBO’s The Wire, will play Heimdall, Odin’s guardian sentry of Asgard, described in some texts as “the whitest of the gods.”

Elba—whose film roles include 28 Weeks Later, RocknRolla and the upcoming The Losers—acknowledges the breakthrough.

“Yeah, casting now is taking definitely a more open-eyed approach to it,” Elba said in a group interview on Sunday in Beverly Hills, Calif., where he was promoting The Losers. “I was cast in Thor, and I’m cast as a Nordic god. If you know anything about the Norse, they don’t look like me, but there you go.”

In The Losers, Elba also plays the part of a character drawn in the comic books as a white guy. Maybe Elba doesn’t look like the artist’s conception of Roque or Heimdall, but we think it’s cool to have a multi-ethnic cast of Asgardians.

MAKING A SCIENCE FICTION MOVIE ON A SHOESTRING: WHERE CAN YOU CUT CORNERS?

Source: io9.com

You’re maxing out your credit cards, or you’ve found an investor. However it’s happened, you’ve got money to make your film. Now the question becomes: how to make that money last? Where do you spend, and where do you save?

I’ve had lots of occasion to grapple with these questions during my time in film school, and I’ve learned the hard way that the less money you have to spend, the harder you have to work to make it effective. The mantra you should be thinking about is, “You get what you pay for.”

Where to spend:

Director of Photography:

If you’re a beginning filmmaker, chances are you don’t have as firm a grasp on cinematography as you would want. I’m not saying that to be dismissive or rude, I’m saying that as a compliment to talented cinematographers, because it’s a very specific skill set. A good DP will come to your project with a willingness to help you execute your vision, but also a viewpoint of their own, so they’ll be able to make suggestions you might not have thought of to bring out the story better.

GATTICA DIRECTOR BACK WITH SCI-FI FABLE

Source: reuters.com

Fox-based producer New Regency is in negotiations to pick up “I’m Mortal,” the latest entry in a genre that uses one big idea to reflect on societal issues. Examples range from last year’s “District 9” to “Children of Men.”

Niccol’s project is set in the not-too-distant future where the aging gene has been switched off. To avoid overpopulation, time has become the currency and the way people pay for luxuries and necessities. The rich can live forever, while the rest try to negotiate for their immortality.

The protagonist is a poor young man who comes into a fortune of time, though too late to help his mother from dying. He ends up on the run from a corrupt police force known as “time keepers.”
