Chapter 2
Written by Krystal
Mary Ann Gray spotted Penny outside the café and rushed over to join her. Mary Ann had missed the massive power outage that happened fifteen minutes ago that caused cell phones and cars to die. Everything had been weird today, including that boy she’d seen in the cemetery. She loved Holy Grounds, as everyone walked away with a smile, and it reminded her of her parent’s happiness before Mary Ann’s mother died. Penny wasn’t happy though when she found out that Mary Ann would be leaving in thirty minutes.
Penny was the kind of beautiful girl who was used to getting what she wanted and lived by the moment, but Mary Ann had a fifteen-year plan for her life. Penny resented Mary Ann’s dedication and pre-planning that had occurred after her mother’s death, but her father’s sadness was something Mary Ann couldn’t tolerate; that was one of the reasons she’d chosen to become a psychologist like him.

Memorable Quotes:
Mary Ann: “There was an outage that caused cars to die?” Weird. Then again, it had been a day of weirdness. Like that boy she’d seen in the cemetery on her way here, who’d somehow caused her to fall – without touching her! (Page 26)
Penny: “Could you please, please, please call in sick?” Penny begged. “A little dose of Mary isn’t going to be enough.” (Page 29)
Penny: “Little. Ha! I suspect you have your life mapped out to the second. You probably even know what underwear you’ll be wearing in three years, five hours, two minutes and eight seconds.”
Mary Ann: “A black lace thong,” Mary Ann responded without hesitation. (Page 30)
Penny: “You said anal.” Penny snickered. (Page 30)
Mary Ann: “Is he dirty?”
Penny: “You mean, perverted? I don’t know, but I’m willing to find out. He’s hawt!” (Page 33)
Mary Ann: The sun stroked him lovingly, practically worshipping his beautiful face. And for a moment, only a moment, Mary Ann saw those different hues in his eyes again. Green, blue, gold and brown. Amazing. But as quickly as they appeared, they vanished, leaving that lazing onyx. (Page 39)
Aden: “Uh, no. I, uh, work there. Just so you know, news stations will probably be blasting stories about the desecration of several graves soon. I was…cleaning things up.”
Mary Ann: Was her mother’s grave okay? It had better be!
Penny: “How wonderfully morbid.” (Page 40)
Questions for discussion:
It’s interesting that Gena choose to switch narration between Aden and Mary Ann. How do you feel about the switch and which personally do you like to spend more time with?
Now that we know Mary Ann’s side of the emotions, what do you think about the relationship between Aden and Mary Ann?
Did you notice anything in this chapter that you’d like to discuss with everyone?

Chapter 3
Written by Krystal
Aden watched as Mary Ann walked away. Penny handed over both Mary Ann’s number and her own before walking away as well. He didn’t know much about girls but he knew he had made Mary Ann uncomfortable. He hoped that she would forgive him though, for she really was responsible for his newfound sense of peace and he wanted to see her more. On the other hand though, the more time he spent around her the more he felt an urge to run away.
He started heading home when Caleb chimed in about the pain they were going to be in tonight. Between the bites, the poison, and Aden’s ability to trip over every piece of trash on the way back to the ranch every part of his body throbbed. The souls started complaining about the dark hole that Mary Ann’s presence put them in, but only Eve had caught a familiar glimpse at her.
Aden finally arrived at the ranch and headed toward the house, continuing the conversation with the souls. While he could have met Mary Ann in any town he lived in, this was really the first place he’d lived that allowed him to be out in public. Suddenly, a lot came into his head and he wanted to talk to Dan but no one answered at the house. He headed toward the bunkhouse where he got ready for bed and tried to tiptoe to his room, only to be caught by the dregs.

Memorable Quotes:
Aden: It was strange, too. The more time he’d spent in her presence, the more he’d had to fight the urge to run away from her. (Page 43-44)
Elijah: You’re really starting to annoy me, Ad Elijah suddenly said. I do not like the airstream or whatever it is that tosses us into that black hole. (Page 44-45)
Eve: A girl. I caught a glimpse of her, Eve said.
Julian: Julian sputtered. A girl? A dumb girl is sending us away? How? (Page 45)
Julian: Well, I for one don’t like how powerless I feel when you’re around her Julian said. (Page 47)
Dan: “I’m trying to save your live, boys. You know that, don’t you?” (Page 53)
Aden: A few times over the past week, when Aden thought no one inside his head was paying attention, he’d pretended Dan was his dad. They certainly looked like they could be related. Both of them had pale hair (when Aden didn’t dye his to stop the blonde jokes), lips almost too full for a boy and square jaws. When he realized what he was doing, though, he’d forced himself to stop. Surprisingly, stopping had made him depressed. (Page 54)
Ms. Killerman: “Ms. Killerman, is it?” There was a breathless quality to her voice that made Aden’s stomach curdle. “Yesterday you called me sweetheart.”
Aden: “I – uh…”
Ms. Killerman: “So how are you, baby, and when will I get to see you again?” (Page 60)
