Hamilton Waymire is an accomplished short story mystery/crime author and winner of the 2010 Derringer Award. In this short story, we meet Benson Keirstad, a private investigator hired by Horace Silver to find his wife, porn star Gwen Guattari.

In short order, Waymire takes readers on a trip through Gwen’s life. Horace, when he is introduced, seems to be the prime suspect in her disappearance, despite his insistence that they loved each other. Through her co-workers at 1000 Volt offices, Benson discovers nothing with that relationship is what it seems, and soon enough he finds her lover; someone who by all accounts adored Gwen. The resolution to the case is sad and unexpected.

All in all, it’s a story I wish were longer for the characters were well-drawn out and filled with such potential that I couldn’t help, but want to read more.
