Cassie Sinclair is the only known hybrid breed that has been born without changing the mother’s ovum. She possesses both coyote and wolf genes that makes her a bit odd. To say nothing of the visions she sees. Breeds that haven’t been around her as she’s grown up, tend to be a bit wary of her. She sees too much and is a bit strange. She is the one breed above all others that that Council wants to get their dirty hands on. And, if that happens it will be war between humans and Breeds.
Dog has known since she was 18 that Cassie is his mate. He’s stayed in the shadows giving her time to mature, while working as a double-agent to help the Breeds. Most people think he’s controlled by the Council, but he’s working to find all the Breeds that are still being experimented on so they can finally free them.
Dog and Cassie play games with each other. Whenever she needs help with something she contacts him knowing that there will always be a price to be paid. She just had him save her twin that she didn’t know existed previously. And, Dog has raised the stakes with his latest price. He wants her body for one night. They both think if they’re careful that no harm will come. However, the mating bond has other ideas. Now Dog has to move up his timeline to get all his undercover operatives out because his cover will be blown once the world discovers who his mate is. And, Dog will do anything to keep his mate and his people safe.
The couple is learning to work through their mating together when another wrench is thrown at them. Another Coyote had tested as a match to be Cassie’s mate and he wants a chance to claim her himself. And, he is using the Breed Mating Laws to do it. The couple is forced to go on the run before Rhyzan is given the go-ahead to separate them to give himself a chance with Cassie.
Cassie knows that Dog is her true mate, but can she convince the Ruling Cabinet of that or will they be cruelly separated on Rhyzan’s say so? The couple must work together to find a solution that will keep them together before Dog sheds his competitor’s blood.
This was a good and fast-paced read that I flew through. It did seem to have more grammatical errors than usual, but maybe that was just the ebook I got? Although, there are always some errors in Leigh’s books so I do expect it.
I have liked Dog for some time so it’s no surprise that I enjoyed him in this book as well. He was never the cruel dominating male that some of the Breeds have been during their matings, in the series, so I appreciated that. I guess it shouldn’t be a surprise since he *is* a playful Coyote.
I have been lukewarm about Cassie throughout this series, but I did enjoy her in this novel. We got to see the steel she has and we saw a taste of the crap she has gone through with how others treat her. Dog will make sure to put an end to any suffering at other’s Breeds’ hands though.
This was a quick read that I didn’t want to put down. And, psst we got to see Graeme again, which I always enjoy.
“You’re going to kill him fast?” Graeme frowned, shedding his lab coat as Cullen handed him his weapon. “My dear, we need to discuss the idea of true pain. You’ll rue the day if you show him mercy. Shall we discuss the merits of torture instead …”
The frightening part was the fact that she seemed all too willing to listen.”
Sadly, it’s the last novel Leigh has written for this series so far and I must wait for the next to be released … whenever that will be. Judging by the epilogue it must be Lobo’s turn for some love … but it looks like he’s really going to have to fight for it!
