Fifteen-year-old Clary was out at the all-ages club, Pandemonium, with her best friend, Simon, when she first encountered Jace. There was something about him that drew her to him that she couldn’t quite explain. Unfortunately, she witnessed him and his friends killing another patron of the club. And, oh yeah Clary was the only one that could see them.
Jace and his friends are Shadowhunters and what Clary witnessed was them killing a demon. This was her first encounter with the Shadowhunters (and demons), but it won’t be her last. In fact, it’s just the beginning.
And, when Clary’s mom is kidnapped and their house is teeming with demons, it’s the Shadowhunters that take Clary in. But when her mom’s secrets come to light it will make Clary question everything she has ever known.
I wasn’t sure what I’d think of this book honestly. I know it’s a popular series, but that usually means nothing to me.
I really enjoyed the characters in this story. I, of course, adored Jace. Although I did feel pretty bad, for Simon who saw him losing his chance with Clary right before his eyes. Luke was interesting as well and I knew there was more to it when he was so harsh with her after her mom’s disappearance.
I got some Harry Potter vibes off of this book even though they are really nothing alike. Must be the whole mundane thing that reminded me too much of the muggles.
And, I could never understand this ‘oh you can see us’ thing and after the club suddenly everyone could see them. Unless they were throwing glamour in the club? I really don’t know.
There was a nice twist at the end of this book that I didn’t see coming until it was upon us. Although it made me sad, for a few of the characters that had been growing so close.
I wanted to like this book as so many others have, but honestly, I found it to just be okay. Nothing that makes me want to rush out and get the other books in the series, although I probably will give the series another chance at some point.
