WEREWOLF ROMANCES WORTH READING

Romance readers have seen a swift uprise in paranormal reading material. Vampires, witches, psychic gifts, and things that you might never have see in your dreams. Werewolves are on the rise in this sub-genre, so if you want to read some romance where at least one major player turns furry here are some great places to start.

The  Crimson Moon series by L.A. Banks begins with Bad Blood. This series has science fiction elements, government conspiracies, supernatural creatures, romance and great action. Banks does a great job of creating a realistic and culturally diverse world. In this series Sasha Trudeau is a special operations soldier working to help the government keep the supernatural in the world under control and secret from the general population.

LOUISE COOPER’S FANTASY WRITING COMPETITION

Louise Cooper was one of Britain’s finest authors of fantasy fiction. For several years, she was also a visiting lecturer and project tutor on the MA Professional Writing course at University College Falmouth. Louise was an extraordinarily insightful and generous teacher, and her loss was felt keenly both by staff on the course and former students who had been lucky enough to be tutored by her.

In memory of Louise, Bloc is launching a new annual competition for aspiring writers of fantasy and/or science fiction. As well as seeing their work published on Bloc, the winner will receive a complete set of Louise Cooper’s Time Master and Star Shadow trilogies.

The judge for this competition is Emily Thomas. Emily edited several of Louise’s books and is now Senior Commissioning Editor for Young Adult Fiction at Hachette Livre.

To enter the competition, please submit a piece of fantasy fiction (which may include science fiction) up to a maximum length of 2500 words. This can be either a short story or an extract from a longer work of fiction, and can be aimed at either adults or younger readers.

FIVE POSITIVE SCI-FI NOVELS TO ENJOY

Do a quick Google search for “positive science fiction novel” and you might be surprised. It seems that many of today’s SF authors believe we’ll wipe ourselves out with global warming, financial meltdowns, or another catastrophe du jour, before we have a chance to rise above our natures. Unless you reach back to the Golden Age, you aren’t going to read a lot of positive work about the transformative powers of science. Here are a few recent exceptions:

ACCELERANDO – CHARLES STROSS
Could be considered the “Singularity Bible.” This conceptually dense and technologically challenging novel takes us through the inflection point of the singularity, to a near-future solar system that has changed beyond recognition. Lots of fun with molecular assemblers, alien corporations, and Matrioshka brains.
