Chapters 12-13
Rephaim was well hidden in the dark sky, flying above the city knowing that the humans wouldn’t notice him. He flew still thinking of Stevie Rae and knowing that it would be bad if his father found out now that he planned to use her, and tried to keep her out of his thoughts. He circled the sky looking for the rogue red fledglings in the abandoned depot building and was relieved when he didn’t find anyone there, especially Stevie Rae. He couldn’t believe how she had entered his body and soul, and was sure that she wouldn’t betray him even if he captured her, their connection was too strong. He left the depot and headed to the Will Rogers High School where he found Dallas and the other red fledglings. They were already leaving to the tunnels before dawn caught up with them. Rephaim wondered if Stevie Rae still felt anything for Dallas after all that had happened. When the fledglings left, he flew to the east wall of the House of Night and then heard and eerie howl. When he came close enough to see, he found Stark’s dog and hid among a tree. He realized why the dog was crying and who Neferet had used for her plan.
Quotes
“Damien has been hysterical. Duchess has been hysterical. The school’s in a dang uproar. I’m the only effing High Priestess who isn’t, supposedly, locked away in her room praying or whatever, so I’ve been busy handling the shit storm out here and the fact that a really nice boy just died.”
– Stevie Rae
“Hey, I have a life waiting for me—a good one, with a kick-ass acting career, fame, fortune, all that stuff. How can you blame me for not wanting to get mixed up in the Neferet mess?” – Erik
“You know what, Erik? All I’m gonna say to you is this: evil wins when good folks do nothing,”
– Stevie Rae
“One vampyre can’t do much. A whole bunch of us joining together can.” – Stevie Rae
“Hey, I have a life waiting for me—a good one, with a kick-ass acting career, fame, fortune, all that stuff. How can you blame me for not wanting to get mixed up in the Neferet mess?” – Erik
“I used to think you were the coolest guy I’d ever met,”
“And now you know I am?”
“Nope. Now I know you’re a weak, selfish boy who’s gotten almost everything he ever wanted just ’cause of his looks. And that’s not cool at all. Maybe someday you’ll find somethin’ you care about enough to stand up for.” – Stevie Rae and Erik
