Chapter 9 – The Mock Turtle’s Story by Caro
The Duchess and Alice reunited again and Alice thought that she was in a much pleasanter temper. She didn’t like being so close to the Duchess; one she was very ugly and secondly she was exactly the right height to rest her sharp chin in Alice’s shoulder. They went on talking about the game and every time the Duchess had a moral for everything.
To Alice’s great surprise the Duchess voice died away. When Alice noticed the Queen the queen was in front of them frowning and warned the Duchess, “Either you or your head must be off, and that in about half no time! Take your choice!”. The Duchess chose, and was gone in a moment.

Alice:” And how many hours a day did you do lessons?”
Mock Turtle: “Ten hours the first day, nine the next, and so on.”
Alice: “What a curious plan!”
Gryphon: “That’s the reason they’re called lessons, because they lessen from day to day”
