SHIVER by Maggie Stiefvater
Chapters 21-23
Sam is trying to wake Grace up for school. As Sam dresses for the day, he finds pictures of his wolf pack in Grace’s sock drawer. Sam flips through the pictures trying to guess who each of the wolves are out of his human friends. Grace finds him looking at the pictures and asks him to tell her who each of them are. Sam tells stories about some of the wolves in their human form. During his recounting of stories, Sam remembers what it feels like to change and is saddened by the thought of never turning human again. He asks Grace to show him the wolf that is him and doubts creep in his mind about whether it is him or not.
Sam tries to follow Jack’s scent after he drops Grace at school. He cannot pick up the right direction and decides to go to Beck’s house to see if there are any signs of wolves or humans there. When it’s clear the house is still empty, Sam decides to break into the Culpepper’s house to see if Jack has been there. He doesn’t find Jack but he does find a room full of stuffed animals that Mr. Culpepper had shot.
Grace is in the kitchen with her father one Saturday morning and he’s distracted as usual. She learns from the conversation that her dad had been part of the hunting party that were shooting the wolves the night that Sam was shot.
Memorable Quotes:
“I didn’t think I belonged here in her world, a boy stuck between two lives, dragging the dangers of the wolves with me, but when she said my name, waiting for me to follow, I knew I’d do anything to stay with her.
