The Twilight Saga fits into the puzzle as a piece of Young Adult fiction. With wikipedia’s definition, Stephenie Meyer’s vision is a target for audience of 12 to 18, but in actuality, spans girls as young as 10.
Columnist Phillip Morris, of Cleveland.com, was recently faced with the same brick wall that so many parents find themselves up against: a young daughter wanting to read Twilight. After skimming the pages he decided to make his 10 year old wait, but is left with dangling questions. Morris writes:
I told her that I think the themes explored in the suspense romance novel are a bit mature for her. She was disappointed because several of her friends are reading or have read the book. I have been questioning myself ever since I confiscated her book, is it my job to censor her reading? Or is it healthier for her development for me to simply celebrate her evolving literary taste?
This perfectly valid question brings back the memory, sneaking a book to read behind my parents backs, knowing that they would never allow me to.

I can only say that if I had a daughter or a son I would let them read Twilight. I don’t think it’s a good idea to censor a kids reading, but a good compromise would be to read the book as well and to discuss it afterwards. That way you could make sure that your child was able to deal with a more mature content. My mom always let me read or watch whatever I wanted, and whenever she was concerned I might be too young for it, we just did it together. I can’t say that it hurt me in any way.
