John and Erma Scott decide that they need to take a break from their lives and decide that heading west is just what they need.  After a miscarriage has threatened their marriage, they know they have to do something to get back on track.  Erma is hoping to salvage their marriage and she thinks that John is on the same page.  The reality is that John has already talked to a lawyer and started divorce proceedings.  He is waiting for the right moment to tell Erma.  After their car breaks down before they reach their destination, they find themselves in Cavus, Montana.  While waiting for the car to be repaired, they begin to meet the townspeople and are enjoying the friendliness that they find there.  They like the quaintness of the town and the slow paced life that they see.

But all is not perfect in the town of Cavus.  There have been a couple of murders and a couple of disappearances of the townsfolk.  The sheriff is not sure what is going on but he is determined to get to the bottom of the problems.  The problem is that he really has no idea what he is really up against or just how dangerous the situation really is.    He decides to go to the festival that is being held in hopes of finding some clues or perhaps one of the missing.  Before that festival is over, he will know what he is up against and he will know how much danger there really is.  He will  know of the evil that has been lurking in the town for a very long time.  The sheriff, along with John and Erma and a few other residents will be in the fight of their lives, fighting for their lives.

23278315  The characters are well developed and realistic.  I just felt that there were a few too many characters introduced.  At times I found myself getting confused as to who was who and I had to look back in the book to figure out who the character was.  This may have just been me and other readers may have had no problem keeping track of the characters.

My favorite characters were the sheriff and Star, a troubled teenager.  The sheriff tried to do the right thing at all times, even if it made his life more difficult.  He was a no nonsense type of guy but he was fair and caring.  He took his job of maintaining law and order very seriously and did not hesitate to go the extra mile to help someone.  Star has lived a troubled past and has no real home life.  She is a little rebellious but overall she is a great kid trying to make her way through life.  Being a teenager is a tough enough job but then having the type of home-life she has makes it twice as hard for Star.  But for all she has been through, she still wants to do the right thing.

The writing style flows smoothly and the author is very descriptive in her writing.  At times I felt like there was too much description.  Some chapters took place back in the past and although some of the material was needed to explain the present day, I felt like maybe too much time was spent on that.  I will say that the author is very talented in writing supernatural horror.  The second half of the book had so much suspense and tension that at times I was afraid to turn the page.  I felt like I was watching a horror movie and I enjoyed this quite a bit.   The plot was well written and the concept was top-notch.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading supernatural horror.  This is the first book I have read by this author but I will look for more books as she writes them.  There was a lot more that I liked about the book than I did not like.  I did enjoy reading this book and I think you will too.
