UNDERWORLD DIRECTOR TAKES ON THE APOCALYPSE

Len Wiseman, the genius behind the vampire-werewolf film series Underworld has decided to attack viewers from a new vantage point. According to THR, the producer-director will be taking on the apocalyptic story entitled, Nocturne that Jeremy Passmore and Andre Fabrizzio recently pitched to Fox.

The project is based on an original idea about a group of people who survive the end of the world and the mystery surrounding how they got to that position. Currently no writers are attached to the pen the screenplay, but the studio is actively seeking people to take on the story. The last feature Wiseman directed was the 2007 sequel, Live Free Die Hard, which was the fourth installment of the popular Bruce Willis action series.

NEW CLASH OF THE TITANS TRAILER IS BALLS-OUT ACTION!

(from scifiwire.com) Heard that they’re remaking Clash of the Titans? Well, forget the stately pace, white robes and fluffy hair of the 1981 Harry Hamlin movie: This new version will be a kick-ass, balls-out actioner, and the newly released teaser trailer gives us a taste of that.

The new movie, starring Terminator Salvation and Avatar’s Sam Worthington, is chock-full of monsters, mythical creatures, giant scorpions, dizzying sword fights and snake-headed Gorgons, brought to you by director Louis Leterrier (The Incredible Hulk). And, yes, don’t blink or you’ll miss Liam Neeson in full armor as Zeus.

DANE COOK WANTS TO PLAY THE RIDDLER IN ‘BATMAN 3′

Just yesterday we revealed the results of last week’s “Batman 3″ poll, in which readers named The Riddler the villain they’d most like to see in the next installment of the Batman movie franchise. Now comes word from actor/comedian Dane Cook that Batman’s question-marked nemesis is exactly the comic book character he’d like to play, given the chance.

“I love the new Dark Knight series and ‘Batman Begins,’” Cook told MTV News when asked if there were any comic book movie characters he has his eye on. “If they brought back The Riddler—a new Riddler the way they did with The Joker—that would be bad-ass. I would do that.”

“When they were making the new one and they were doing The Joker, I always thought it [should be] kind of like ‘The Crow’—having that dark element but still comedic,” said Cook of the type of Riddler he’d like to bring to the franchise. “It would probably have to be something in that vein, even though I think what Heath Ledger did with the Joker was the greatest comic book villain ever.”

WILL SMITH CONTINUES HIS ASSAULT ON THE SCI-FI GENRE

Oh no. The greatest threat to modern sci-fi film adaptations has potentially struck again. Not content with reducing Asimov to a robo-whodunnit with retro trainers, and Matheson’s ironically titled I Am Legend to a hero piece glorifying a thinly-veiled Will Smith likeness as he saves the world yet again, the Smithinator has now set his sights on Daniel Keyes’ sci-fi novella, Flowers For Algernon.

Multiple sources suggest that Smith is eyeing the role for himself – the more cynical among them suggesting it’s with a view to awards glory. We won’t speculate on motives but must come out and say: it’s a bad idea. While the book itself is poignantly affecting, it would be difficult to adapt to film without turning it into a nasty, syrupy weepfest. Moreover, it would work best with an unknown in the role of protagonist Charlie.

Whether it comes to anything or not, Smith’s assault on the sci-fi genre is likely to continue unabated. He is in talks to star in a prequel to I Am Legend (presumably detailing the pre-apocalypse apocalypse, in which he saves the world again – tsk, stupid world, always getting into mischief) and a sequel to I, Robot.
