S.E.G.O. — Science Fiction You Should Be Reading
by Devilstower at Daily Kos

There’s an old saying about the golden age of science fiction — it’s twelve. That is, twelve is the age where readers seem most willing to take the Door into Summer, to try and visualize a tesseract, to boldly split infinitives like no one has split them before. Not too long after that, even those who continue to read fiction not handed to them by a teacher find that they’re no longer able or willing to follow along on a trip at a galactic scale.
Even on the bookshelves some of the works regarded as science fiction’s best had a hard time finding a general audience, not only because of a bad media image, but because they seemed to be written to an audience more interested in the nuts and bolts than the people on the other end of the wrench. I suspect that many of the people who were hard SF fans in the 1970s turned to Clancyesque military fare in the 1980s, a place where they could satisfy their thirst to know the serial number on the bottom of the gadgets that were at the center of the plots.

THE WAR OF THE DWARVES
Anna Gregson at Orbit

Translated from the original German by the very talented Sally-Ann Spencer, this is the eagerly anticipated sequel to The Dwarves (UK/ US/ ANZ), described by SFRevu as: ‘The kind of solid fantasy that the market thrives upon’, and by The Bookbag as ‘A fabulous addition to the fantasy genre’.
The War of the Dwarves, from international bestseller Markus Heitz, will be released this month.

Neil Gaiman: Ghost Writer
Serena Altschul at CBS News

“What do you think your attraction to the dark side of things is?” Altschul asked.
“I think the thing that crystallized it for me, the moment that I actually understood it for myself, was a quote from Ogden Nash, the great American poet and humorist, where he said, ‘Where there’s a monster, there’s a miracle.’
“And I realized that that, for me, is the joy of the monstrous. It’s the joy of ghosts, fiction, joy of vampires. It’s the miraculous.”
The monstrous and the miraculous have been kind to Neil Gaiman. He’s sold millions of novels, comics and kids’ books, from “Sandman” to Batman to Coraline. None other than horror master Stephen King has called him a “treasure trove of story.”

Schools’ Nonfiction Problem (True Story)
By Tom Kuntz at the New York Times

The “Harry Potter” phenomenon brought parental sighs of relief over a revival of reading among the young (perhaps overly optimistic sighs). And the revival has morphed lately into the wild popularity of the “Twilight” series of hormonally charged teenage vampire novels.
But on his Washington Post blog Class Struggle, Jay Mathews, a veteran education writer, highlights longstanding concerns among some educators that youthful reading is weighted too much toward fiction — a view seconded on other blogs.
Mr. Mathews explains why nonfiction books get short shrift in schools and draws on the educational theorist E.D. Hirsch Jr. to argue why they shouldn’t:
Educators say nonfiction is more difficult than fiction for students to comprehend. It requires more factual knowledge, beyond fiction’s simple truths of love, hate, passion and remorse. So we have a pathetic cycle. Students don’t know enough about the real world because they don’t read nonfiction, and they can’t read nonfiction because they don’t know enough about the real world.

Read the First Chapter of Seth Grahame-Smith’s Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter
via io9

Seth Grahame-Smith, whose debut novel, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies became an overnight sensation and New York Times-bestseller in 2009, stumbled upon The Secret Journal of Abraham Lincoln, and became the first living person to lay eyes on it in more than 140 years.
Using the journal as his guide and writing in the grand biographical style of Doris Kearns Goodwin and David McCullough, Seth has reconstructed the true-life story of our greatest president for the first time—all while revealing the hidden history behind the Civil War and uncovering the role vampires played in the birth, growth, and near-death of our nation.

“Blameless”, or “How To Design A Cover in 1:55 seconds”
Lauren Panepinto at Orbit
As you guys know, your friendly neighborhood Creative Director has been slaving away at the Fall 2010/Winter 2011 Orbit covers (yes, we work that far in advance) and now that the covers are (mostly) done I’ve started to launch them on the blog for your viewing pleasure, and general online critique. Well, I have a special treat above for devoted Orbit fans, cover design aficionados, and especially admirers of Ms. Alexia Tarabotti, heroine of Soulless. Timed to celebrate this month’s release of Changeless, Alexia Tarabotti’s second adventure, I have a special Making of the Cover Video for the next book, due out in September 2010, Blameless.
Over 6 hours of my onscreen compositing, retouching, color correction, type obsessing, all condensed down to a slim sexy one minute 55 seconds of cover design. Trust me, no one wants to watch it in real-time…

I love seeing behind the scenes stuff for making books. It’s a pretty cool video. And I like the series too. And I wish we had read more non-fiction in school, I read a lot of it now. I think they’re much more interesting than the texts books, and if you pick the right one they can give you the basic info that you’d get from textbooks, but in a much more interesting manner. And I hate when people say that they need to make it easier for kids in high school. My high school curriculum didn’t prepare me for college in the slightest (except my senior English class). Teenagers are smart-stop dumbing stuff down for them.I know part of the problem is some people don’t like to read, and novels are more likely to get them hooked, but once you get to high school there should be a mix.
What did you think of the Abraham Lincoln:Vampire Hunter excerpt? Do you read Neil Gaiman’s books? What about Soulless?

Twilight Takes Over Oscars! Kinda!

What’s an awards show these days without some teen vampires and werewolves? Nothing! So that’s why at this year’s Academy Awards, they snuck some in. The Twilight Saga: New Moon had, let’s see, zero Oscar nominations, but somehow here’s Anna Kendrick, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner attending the ritziest party of the year.
So Kendrick didn’t technically sneak in. She totally earned it, being nominated for Best Supporting Actress for Up In The Air and also presenting an award (lucky!) with Zac Efron.
But Taylor and Kristen dodged bodyguards and hid behind props to get into this thing. OK, not exactly—but did the Academy cook up a tribute to horror films just to have an excuse to put these two on stage together?
Also, Robert Pattinson couldn’t make it, but still got mentioned in Neil Patrick Harris’ opening ballad.
So now that the stars have gained access to the planet’s most exclusive party, all that’s left is to make a Twilight movie worthy of Oscar night…

See costumes and props from Oscar nominees at the Hollywood Museum
If you’re in the neighborhood of the Kodak Theatre and can’t get into the Oscars this weekend, try the next best thing. Drop by the Hollywood Museum one block away – it’s located in the Max Factor Building at 1660 N. Highland Ave., where you can see costumes and artifacts from leading nominees like “The Hurt Locker,” “The Blind Side,” “Inglourious Basterds,” “Julie & Julia,” “The Young Victoria,” “Bright Star,” “(500) Days of Summer” and “Star Trek” mixed in with treasures from Oscars past, like “Gone With the Wind,” “Ben-Hur,” “Gladiator” and even the first film to win best picture, “Wings.”
I serve as guest curator every year to organize this exhibition titled “And the Winner Is …,” which celebrates all films up for kudos throughout the award season. We even feature items from such popular films as “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen,” “Twilight: New Moon” (yes, yes, we have a Taylor Lautner costume in addition ones worn by Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart) and Miley Cyrus’ concert film. Some of them were up for guild awards or even — yikes — Razzies.

No Razzies for ‘The Twilight Saga: New Moon,’ Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, and Taylor Lautner
A couple of weeks ago, the nominees for this year’s satirical Razzie Awards came down and showed The Twilight Saga: New Moon and its cast to be nominated in several categories.
The Razzies – of the Golden Raspberry Award Foundation – are purposed at “saluting the worst that Hollywood has to offer each year.”
The Twilight Saga: New Moon was nominated for several Razzies, including “WORST REMAKE, RIP-OFF or SEQUEL,” “WORST SCREEN COUPLE of 2009″ for “Kristen Stewart & Either Robert Pattinson or Taylor Lautner, Twilight Saga: New Moon,” “WORST SUPPORTING ACTOR OF 2009″ for Robert Pattinson, and “WORST SCREENPLAY OF 2009.”
New Moon, Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, and Taylor Lautner all escaped winning in these categories (one award series that Twilight fans might not be sad to see the franchise lose at), but one person who did win a Razzie was Sandra Bullock (for The Blind Side), and, classy lady that she happens to be, she showed up to accept it herself. RED CARPET EXCLUSIVE: Anna Kendrick says Oscar red carpet is nothing compared to ‘Twilight’

Oscar-nominated actress Anna Kendrick told FoxNews.com where she was when the Academy Award nominations were announced.
“I was actually running. I was too nervous to watch the nominations come up,” said the “Up in the Air” star. “I waited for my roommate to text me and then I sprinted home.”
When she heard she was nominated she “celebrated with a lot of food and champagne – at 5 in the morning, it was still dark out!”
“This film has been a whole different ball game,” said Anna, who also stars in the ‘Twilight’ saga. “It was the only film I’ve done that i was the youngest person on set.”
And it turns out the young star was one of the old pros when it comes to red carpets.
“It’s a little crazy,” she said. “But once you’ve been to a ‘Twighlight’ red carpet, you’re a pro.” SOURCE
Writing the Twilight Saga: An Exclusive Interview with Melissa Rosenberg
The challenge of adapting Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight Saga to the big screen has fallen to writer Melissa Rosenberg, who, by the end of it, will have provided the scripts for each novel. Earths Mightiest editor Edward Gross sat down for a one-on-one interview with Rosenberg, who is also co-executive producer of Dexter.
This interview, which was conducted at the Four Seasons Hotel in Los Angeles back in November, looks at the making of New Moon, Rosenberg’s collaboration with David Slade on Eclipse and what she feels she’s learned from working with Slade, Chris Weitz and Catherine Hardwicke during the making of these films.

Chris Weitz turns down Twilight Breaking Dawn?
Now that we pretty much know that the final book in the Twilight saga, Breaking Dawn, is being broken into two movies (it’s not been confirmed, but there are few who don’t expect it to happen), arguably the big question remaining is just who Summit Entertainment is going to rope in to direct them.
It’s easy enough to rule out Catherine Hardwicke, who helmed the first movie, as she’s now looking to do The Girl With The Red Riding Hood with Amanda Seyfried (also, it does seem that she and Summit aren’t best of chums). David Slade, who’s putting the finishing touches to Twilight: Eclipse, is not someone Summit appears keen to re-recruit either.
Yet, Chris Weitz, the man who steered the ship on Twilight: New Moon, has been near the top of most people’s list to at least take on one of the Breaking Dawn movies. However, that idea now appears dead, as the director himself has ruled himself out of the running.
“Of course I’m interested,” he told MTV. “But I think I’m on record saying I have a 2-and-a-half-year-old son.”
“Because it’d be such a long shoot for ‘Breaking Dawn’, it kind of brings me to the edge of my physical and mental endurance. And I just don’t believe I have it in me, and I think that it’s appropriate that someone else go ahead and do it.”
Summit’s search, therefore, continues. We’d like it to take the kind of gambles that Warner Bros eventually started taking with its Harry Potter movies, ideally, but given how crucial the Twilight saga is to the fabric of Summit Entertainment, don’t be surprised if it goes for a safe choice.
We wonder what Mr Ratner is doing?

‘Twilight’s’ Kellan Lutz: ‘Eclipse’ is an action a movie for guys

Kellan Lutz doesn’t want guys to be scared off by the “Twilight” love story.
In fact, he assures guys that the upcoming sequel “Eclipse” is “badass.”
“The action really drew me in and I think the guys are really going to like this movie,” he told MTV News, suggesting that both the romantic and action elements would make a great date-night movie.
Without spoiling too much of the plot for those who haven’t read the books, “Eclipse” will mobilize the vampires and the werewolves in a battle that involves Bella (Kristen Stewart) of course.
“I enjoy doing action movies,” said Lutz. “I enjoy being, you know, fighting and stuff like there, but there’s a lot of action [this time around]. A lot more than the love story.”
You can get a sneak preview of the action in the “Eclipse” trailer that will play before Robert Pattinson’s “Remember Me,” which hits theaters on Friday, March 12. “Eclipse” will premiere on June 30. SOURCE
Chris Weitz Wishes He Could Cut the Frolicking Vampire Scene From New Moon
Twilight fans still have a few months to go before Eclipse hits theaters this Summer, but they’ll flock to the stores in a few weeks to pick up copies of New Moon on DVD on March 21. There are a few editions featuring all kinds of bonus features, and I was lucky enough to chat with director Chris Weitz on everything from his favorite scene, to Rob and Kristen’s relationship, to what he wishes had ended up on the cutting room floor.
There are lots of different editions of the New Moon DVD. Which bonus features are you particularly excited about? I’m excited that my voice will finally be heard! For me, the fun thing was doing the commentary with Peter Lambert, my editor, because it kind of re-created the atmosphere in the cutting room. Peter’s a really funny guy, and we were able to delve into not only the behind-the-scenes moments, but to explain why certain things were shot or cut together in certain ways. So that, for me, was the most fun.
When you go back and watch it again, are there things you’d like to change if you could? I would like to never have shot Rob and Kristen running through the forest and Kristen’s just turned into a vampire. Because everybody always laughs and it makes me feel terrible. [Laughs] I would have shot it a different way so it wouldn’t get that response. But otherwise, I’m very happy with things.
You must get lots of questions abut Rob and Kristen. Do you laugh it off or are you totally sick of hearing about it? I’m somewhat clueless — when you’re the director, you’re kind of like the school principal. Nobody really tells you anything. You really have no idea what’s going on. I’m the last person who would know about this kinda stuff. I’m sure you could get more from reading the paper. MORE HERE
‘Eclipse’ Will Be Steamy, Says ‘New Moon’ Director
Although Weitz is not directing ‘Eclipse’ — director David Slade is taking over — he has read the script.
Spoiler alert: The scene includes Bella, who is on the run from evil vampire Victoria. To keep from freezing in the cold, she snuggles close to werewolf Jacob. Of course, a jealous Edward looks on and isn’t too happy about it.
Weitz also revealed the other scenes he’s excited for fans to see, including an intense action sequence featuring Edward Cullen’s vampire “parents,” played by Elizabeth Reaser and Peter Facinelli.
“I have a special interest in seeing Peter and Elizabeth tear people’s heads off,” he says with a laugh.
“Knowing them, and how kind of kooky and delightful they are, I’m going to find seeing them being ultra-violent very interesting indeed.” SOURCE
Chris Weitz Bails on ‘Breaking Dawn’; Twi-Hard Nation Sheds Sparkly Tear, Wonders What’s Next
Sorry, Twi-hards; Chris Weitz has some bad news for you.
After months of feverish speculation, the New Moon director’s rep has confirmed that Weitz won’t be on board for Breaking Dawn, the final installment (or is that installments?) of The Twilight Saga. According to the rep, it was Weitz’s decision not to carry on with the series.
But even though he won’t be ordering sexy vamps and werewolves around anymore, Weitz will be keeping busy over the next year or so; despite his earlier suggestions that he might quit the movie biz, the Golden Compass helmsman has several new projects in the works, including the pick-up comedy The Game (based on the Neil Strauss novel), American Pie 4 and the intriguingly titled Another Bullsh*t Night in Suck City (which is probably the exact sentiment that many Twi-hards are experiencing upon reading this news).
But let’s wipe away those tears and turn our attention to the pressing topic at hand: If Weitz is out, who should direct Breaking Dawn? Eclipse director David Slade? Woody Allen? (Please, let it be Woody Allen!) SOURCE
Oh I would love to leave my husband for Edward!!
I admit that I did laugh when I first saw the frolicking scene in ‘New Moon’. It just seemed so out of place in the dark setting of the Volturi, but the other times I saw it, I understood what Weitz was trying to portray but I wish they would have changed the wardrobe. ::giggles::
With all this speculation over the director for ‘Breaking Dawn’, who would your choice be?

HBO WILL PLAY ‘GAME OF THRONES’
Source: artsbeat.blogs.nytimes. com
If you’ve been jonesing for an epic fantasy to help fill the gap between Peter Jackson’s “Lord of the Rings” movies and the maybe-someday remake of “Dune,” HBO may have just rolled the saving throw you needed.
On Tuesday, the cable channel announced that it had officially ordered “Game of Thrones,” a new series based on George R. R. Martin’s “Song of Ice and Fire” fantasy novels. The best-selling book franchise, which began in 1996 with “A Game of Thrones,” chronicles the dynastic conflicts among several families on the mythical continent of Westeros.
The principal cast of the HBO series, which will run 10 episodes, features no less than 17 cast members, including Mark Addy, Sean Bean, Peter Dinklage, Jennifer Ehle, Iain Glen and Lena Headey, as well as Tamzin Merchant (of “Pride and Prejudice”) as the heroine Daenerys Targaryen.

Robert Pattinson wax figure announced by Madame Tussauds in London
Ask and ye shall receive . . . at least that appears to be the sentiment when it comes to seeing The Twilight Saga: Eclipse and Remember Me star Robert Pattinson in a wax figure sort of state.
Madame Tussauds, a famed international celebrity wax museum chain, has announced that their London venue will play host to a brand new sculpture of Robert Pattinson himself . . . and that this was by popular demand.
The studios team are busy recreating R-Pattz’s trademark sultry expression and messy hair, whilst the figure’s outfit will reflect his rugged style with an open collared shirt and skinny trousers. The figure making process takes four months of intense work to complete at a cost of £150,000.
Pretty pricey monument, eh?
Tussauds goes on to state that they “have been inundated by requests to make him at Madame Tussauds London.”
The company reports an estimated availability schedule of April for the product. SOURCE
Summit replaces editor on ‘The Twilight Saga: Eclipse’
Summit Entertainment, the studio behind the uber-successful Twilight series, confirmed this morning that it has replaced Eclipse editor Art Jones with Nancy Richardson, the editor of Catherine Hardwicke’s original Twilight film. The studio is not placing blame on Jones, who previously worked with Eclipse director David Slade on his horror film 30 Days of Night as well as Slade’s Ellen Page-starrer Hard Candy. They do believe, however, that Slade’s material – which they call “very good” – needed a stronger edit. The studio has more confidence in Richardson, who they say understands the emotion of the characters and is an ace at balancing action with the other elements of the film.
Richardson recently completed Miley Cyrus’ upcoming romantic drama The Last Song. Eclipse is scheduled to debut on June 30. SOURCE
‘Remember Me’ Stars Rave About Robert Pattinson At NYC Premiere
NEW YORK — The mountains of snow piled up on the sidewalks could not keep Robert Pattinson’s fans at bay Monday evening (March 1) at the red-carpet premiere for his romantic drama, “Remember Me.” The screaming masses lined up early and were gifted with a few moments of rabid OME-dom as RPattz ran down the line greeting all those who waited to catch a glimpse of him.
Inside the makeshift press tent at the Paris Theatre in midtown, the energy was no less wild, the screams of folks waiting to talk with Pattinson no less ear-piercing. But the 23-year-old superstar, tired yet amused as ever by the pandemonium, seemed to take it all in stride. While MTV News was chatting with his co-star Emilie de Ravin, Pattinson leaned over and shouted, “Emilie! Emilie! What’s the most fascinating thing about me? Just say it!”

‘Twilight’ Star Kellan Lutz ‘Wouldn’t Want To See’ ‘Breaking Dawn’ In 3-D
Kristen Stewart gave it a maybe. Robert Pattinson thinks it might give him a headache. So what does Kellan Lutz think about the idea of releasing “Breaking Dawn” in 3-D, when (or if) it’s made? Well, he’s not too keen on the idea.
“I heard they were talking about it. I don’t really care to see it in 3-D,” he told MTV News on the red carpet at Cosmopolitan magazine’s 2010 Fun Fearless Males party on Monday night in New York City.
Like Pattinson, Lutz isn’t a big fan of movies filmed in multiple dimensions. “3-D kind of hurts my eyes anyways. ‘Avatar’ was amazing in 3-D and in IMAX, but I don’t think I wanna see a little baby half-vampire in 3-D,” he said, echoing a similar sentiment made by Stewart. “There’s just some scenes I just wouldn’t want to see in 3-D.”
And with no formal announcement that more movies will be shot from the “Twilight Saga,” Lutz is in favor of breaking the book up into two flicks with “New Moon” helmer Chris Weitz back in the director’s chair, if the film should get the green light. “I’d love to see Chris Weitz come back,” he said late last year. “I just had so much fun shooting with him. I mean, obviously I would just love to do ['Breaking Dawn']. There’s no word. … Hopefully we get that phone call, and if they want to make it into five movies, I just don’t want it to end. I love my character so much.”
I wonder how Rob feels with having himself made into a wax figure? I mean this totally means he as ‘made it’ but the wax figure thing really creeps me out!
I love the natural chemistry that Emilie and Rob share, I can’t wait to see how it is portrayed on film!!
What do you think about Summit changing the editor for ‘Eclipse’?
What do you think about Breaking Dawn possibly being in 3-D? I don’t know how I would feel about that. I think for the forest scences when Bella is first discovering her vampire-powers that would be cool, but other than that I cant’ imagine any other scenes needing to be 3-D.
