VAMPIRES: HISTORY AND CRAZE

The Vampire Craze: An In Depth Analysis Of The Hottest Male Vampires

www.guidetobeautyschools.com:Vampires are sort of, what’s the word, in right now. I mean, if you haven’t been living in Antarctica this past year, you may have noticed a very obvious trend. Remember way back in the day when every guy wanted to be Neo from The Matrix because he had that cool trench coat and could do sweet flips? Those days are long gone. Today it’s all about fangs and an aversion to sunlight. Goth is back. Pale is the new tan. Here’s a countdown of the greatest, most stunning, most please-bite-me-now creatures of the night ever. I’ll tell you what works, what doesn’t work, and why I want – no, need – to be alone in a dark alley with them.

20. Stuart Townsend as Lestat in Queen of the Damned

He’s no Edward Cullen. Stuart Townsend plays Lestat not with boyish good looks and designer sunglasses, but with very pale features, long hair, and incredibly intense eyes. In fact, they may be a little hypnotic. Anne Rice’s Lestat is a bad ass. He’s a killer. He’s on the fringe of society, and unlike the soft and cuddly vampires we’ve become familiar with of late, he loves the taste of blood. I don’t care how sweet and innocent the girl, Lestat will never go vegetarian. Costume designers and make-up artists have managed to combine the bad boy image with obvious sex appeal. In mesh tops, black leather pants, and tattoos, here is the vampire you should probably never invite inside, but hey, if mistakes happen, at least you know you’ll die happy. And, if mesh tops and a lot of blood play just aren’t your thing (to each her own), maybe you’ll love his sexy French accent. There’s something to be said about a guy who can roll his r’s as well as Stuart Towsend.

5. David Boreanaz as Angel in Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel

Even though he was kind of a stalker in the first season, Angel made girls around the United States swoon – myself included. Apparently David Boreanaz was only meant to appear in a select few episodes of the first season, but the overwhelming support from fans not only caused Joss Whedon to keep him in the series, but motivated him to create a spin-off TV show entitled, Angel. And who can blame him? Not only does Angel have one of the all time epic forbidden romances with vampire slayer Buffy Summers, he kicks major ass. With billowing black coats, very gelled hair, and an incredibly chiseled face, Angel is sort of the perfect male specimen. And while some may gripe that he sometimes loses his soul when he achieves perfect happiness, his evil, soulless, counterpart is even more entertaining to watch. To start with, he wears leather pants on a regular basis and becomes ten times more snarky. It’s not only fun to watch, it’ll convince you that the bad guys probably do have a lot more fun.

And I won’t tell you who were the first three, hehehe. This list does have some of my favorite vampires and I loved the reason the writer gaved us :) What did you think of the list?

A bit of vampire history for your Halloween bash

www.baltimoresun.com: WARNING: This is gonna get gross.

The subject here is vampires. Sorry, but it’s that time of year. And this year bloodsuckin’ is … well … bloody, bloody hot.

Be still thy bleeding hearts.

Seems like prime time for a Hallowed Eve’s bash that’s drip-drop-drippin’ with the gory, the gross, the all-in-bloody-good-fun. Not even the Count himself would have counted on so many — young and old — being so bitten by this O-positive plunge.

This vampire thing goes back, all the way to antiquity. Old blood indeed. The trail begins in ancient Persia, where someone discovered a vase depicting a man struggling with a blood-sucking creature. The Aztecs, too, got in on the sanguineness, convinced that offering a victim’s blood ensured fertilization of the Earth.

In the mid-15th century, vampirism got a boost from Vlad Tepes Dracula, Prince of Wallachia, an ancient kingdom that’s now part of Romania. Ol’ Vlad — whose middle name, Tepes, means “Impaler” — is remembered as a bloodthirsty tyrant who ordered thousands of people impaled. Four centuries later Bram Stoker made him a poster boy for vampires with his 1897 “Dracula.”

Anne Rice: Interview with a Vampire

Author: Krystal109 | Filed under: Book Reviews

Brought to you by OBS staff member Erin

Book One: Vampire Chronicles

Summary
This is the story of the Louis, as told in his own words, of his journey through mortal and immortal life. Louis recounts how he became a vampire at the hands of the radiant and sinister Lestat and how he became indoctrinated, unwillingly, into the vampire way of life. His story ebbs and flows through the streets of New Orleans, from his creation in 1791 until the present. (From annerice.com)

Review
I have to admit, I am somewhat biased when it comes to this book. Interview with the Vampire was my introduction to vampire literature, so it is the standard by which I measure every other vampire book that crosses my path. That being said, it isn’t just a good vampire novel. It’s beautifully written and exciting and reading it lets you experience the night world of Louis as well as New Orleans and Paris of the 18th century. Louis’ world is beautiful and intoxicating, and it makes you want to be a vampire, except for the anguish he goes through over the things he’s lost, the things he’ll never have, and things he’s done. Since the book is from a first person perspective, its character driven, but still full of action. It is the kind of book you read for hours, but it feels like minutes.

When it was published, Interview with a Vampire was the first of its kind with vampires who suffer from the human condition. Before Anne Rice vampires were the villains; Dracula and Nosferatu come to mind. This book gave them vulnerability; they still had the killer edge, but now there was something sexy about it. She changed the face of vampires forever.

Although remakes have been a common trend in the Weekly Ketchup for quite a while, few weeks have ever been as dominated by them as this one, with remakes taking up 6 of the 11 stories. That is surely an all time (and dubious) record. And then there’s a few sequels as well (White Chicks 2, Spider-Man 5 & 6). Hooray for originality, Hollywood.

ROTTEN IDEA OF THE WEEK: 44 YEAR OLD ROBERT DOWNEY JR IN TALKS TO PLAY THE VAMPIRE LESTAT?

Photobucket

There were several contender’s for this week’s rotten idea, but I ultimately had to side against something particular about this following story. Bloody Disgusting received a tip this week that Universal Pictures is actively developing plans to relaunch a new movie franchise based upon Anne Rice’s The Vampire Chronicles, which was previously adapted as Interview with the Vampire, starring Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise and Queen of the Damned, starring Stuart Townsend (playing Lestat, the same vampire played by Tom Cruise). First off, I should say that I actually think this might be a good idea. Twilight is making vampires popular with young people again, and so sure, why not revive Anne Rice’s vampires?

Whoa! I’m really shocked at this list! I mean Spider-man should NOT make anymore sequels, UGH quit up when your aheadeven please! I’m excited about The Vampire Chronicles, not to sure about Downey playing Lestat, but maybe he will prove me wrong ;)

What do you think about this list of sequels/remakes? Are you a fan of remakes, do you think these will bring “new life” to our old classic movies? How do you feel about Robert Downey Jr playing Lestat?

From newly bitten to centuries old, Vampire-Con had a delightful quantity of surprises to please even the most well-versed vampire academic. Despite the modest turn out, there were plenty of vendors, sights, and exciting information of upcoming books and movies to keep everyones attention.

HIGHLIGHTS:

Angela Aleiss, PhD and film historian, announced that film remakes/ new films were going to be made for the Vampire Chronicles Series written by Anne Rice. It has been rumored that Robert Downey Jr. will play Lestat in a Interview with the Vampire re-make, however, there is no credible confirmation(s) to support that statement. (Not to mention he would be TOO old to play Lestat) In an email to one of her fans, Anne Rice wrote:

“I cannot confirm this story. The negotiations are entirely in the hands of my agents. I know they are always working on setting up my books with good motion picture prospects. But I do not have anything specific to say on the matter right now. I am optimistic that we will see good movies in the future based on the Vampire Chronicles. When I do have news to report, I will post it on my website. I thank you for your interest. I can certainly confirm that the film of Queen of the Damned was a terrible disappointment to me and to many of the readers. Thank you for your letter.”

The Vampires and Sexuality lecture had a few surprise guests…

Contrary to circulating rumors, there was not a specific lecture nor vendor dealing with Twilight or True Blood merchandise, nor any other popular vampire franchise. Popular vampire films and literature were briefly mentioned throughout each lecture, but the main focus was on vampire history and it’s influence today.

I wanted to attend this event but sadly could not afford it. I wish I had heard some of the lectures, they sound fascinating. I am intrigued by Vampire history and it’s modern influence.

Did you attend any of the lectures? What do you think of the lecture topics? Do they interest you? enough to possibly attend next year?

From movies, TV, and books, we (Ew.com) take a stab (sorry) at ranking the all-time bloodsucker elite:

20. CALEB AND MAE From 1987’s Near Dark

19. SELENE From the Underworld Trilogy

14. DAVID From 1987’s The Lost Boys

13. JEAN-CLAUDE From Laurell K. Hamilton’s Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter Series

12. ZOEY REDBIRD From P.C. and Kristin Cast’s House of Night Series

10. GARY OLDMAN’S DRACULA

9. SCHUYLER VAN ALEN From Melissa de la Cruz’s Blue Bloods Series

7. ANGEL

5. BILL AND ERIC From True Blood

4. EDWARD CULLEN From Twilight

1. LESTAT

For the complete list and explanations, click here

lol@stab. Aww I think Selene should be farther up the list, she’s a bad ass! Zoey from The House of Night Series is perfect for the list – she’s a strong female character doing her best to do what’s right. I like characters that struggle to find themselves.

And I don’t agree with Lestat being number 1, do you? Who would be on your list?

Did you know . . .

. . . that before German director F.W. Murnau killed the vampire Orlock (Max Schreck) with the rising sun in his 1922 silent-screen masterpiece, “Nosferatu,” sunlight NEVER was fatal to vampires in any myths, legends or even Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel “Dracula” — but after “Nosferatu,” it became a near-universal aspect of vampire lore and literature?

. . . that Max Schreck’s last name means terror or fright in German, and it was his real name?

. . . that writer-producer Alan Ball discovered the Sookie Stackhouse novels, the inspiration for his series “True Blood,” because he arrived early for a dentist’s appointment and decided to kill time at a nearby Barnes & Noble store?

. . . that writer Anne Rice loudly protested the idea of Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise starring in director Neil Jordan’s film version of her “Interview With the Vampire,” saying it was like casting Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer to play vampires Louis and Lestat? (She reversed course after seeing the film.)

More facts here.

Wow, interesting facts.  I love all the fun background information.

What do you think of the vampire facts? Did you know this information?

Do you think Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt were right for their parts in Interview with a Vampire?
