GEORGE R.R. MARTIN’S A SONG OF FIRE AND ICE

Over the course of July, I ripped through the four published books in George R.R. Martin’s planned seven-book series, A Song of Fire and Ice. The story of a nation torn apart by civil war after the death of a king who killed the last ruler in a previous dynasty, the books begin tightly focused on a single holdfast and expand out across continents and cultures. The story also begins with one version of history that is gradually, vigorously contested. It’s one of the most impressive feats of world-building I’ve ever read, but while I was discussing this with my friend Amber, she pointed me towards this passage in Kerry Howley’s piece on cryonics:

Shortly after they met, Peggy and Robin decided to read each other’s favorite works of literature.

JUSTIN CRONIN: DARKER SIDE OF TWILIGHT

Many parents will, at some time, have played the game with their children of making up a story together. Usually, this exercise in dreaming up a plot and characters is a ploy to improve youngsters’ reading and writing skills, or just to encourage them to complete their homework. But for American academic, Justin Cronin, it has turned him into the most talked-about writer of the summer.

He was talking plot lines with his eight-year-old daughter, Iris, while he pounded the streets of their native Houston, Texas, in his running shoes and she cycled alongside him on her bicycle, little knowing that the pair had come up with the template for his novel The Passage, for which he would receive an advance of £2.5 million.

‘Game of Thrones’ recasts noble role

By Maureen Ryan at the Chicago Tribune
Photobucket
HBO’s “Game of Thrones” has recast the role of Daenerys Targaryen.

Last month, I reported that Tamzin Merchant, who originally had been cast as Daenerys, had left the project. I can exclusively report that actress Emilia Clarke has been cast in the role of the exiled noblewoman in the fantasy drama.

HBO also confirmed Friday something that George R.R. Martin wrote recently on his blog: Production on the drama, which is set to debut next year, has been pushed back from June to late July. Some of the pilot, which was filmed last fall, will have to be reshot, given that Clark has replaced Merchant and Irish actress Michelle Fairley has replaced Jennifer Ehle, who also left “Thrones” after the pilot was filmed.

MTV picks up 12 episodes of “Teen Wolf”

via Hollywood News
Photobucket
Filled with suspense and the struggle to discover one’s true identity, MGM and MTV will put a modern spin on one of the most popular classic films of the eighties, “Teen Wolf.” The reinvention comes alive as a sexy thriller set against the drama of high school life with a forbidden, romantic love story at its core. From the creator of “Criminal Minds”, Jeff Davis, and the executive producer of “The 4400”, René Echevarria, “Teen Wolf” is to commence production this summer with 12 one-hour episodes.

The thriller stars Tyler Posey (“Maid in Manhattan,” “Brothers and Sisters”), as the newly bitten werewolf, ‘Scott McCall’, Dylan O’Brien as his best friend ‘Stiles’, Crystal Reed as the mysterious new girl in town, ‘Allison’, and Tyler Hoechlin (“Road to Perdition,” “7th Heaven”) as the older and possibly quite dangerous werewolf, ‘Derek Hale.’

Alaina Huffman on the ‘Stargate Universe’ Season Finale, Season Two, and More (SPOILERS)

By Mike Moody at TV Squad

Life is tough aboard Destiny, the wandering spaceship that’s home to the crew of Syfy’s ‘Stargate Universe.’ The food is bad, the morale is low, and there’s always a chance that a gang of creepy blue aliens will attack the ship or kidnap you from your quarters.

What has interacting with the ‘Stargate’ fans been like for you as part of this new cast that’s taking the franchise in such a different direction?
As far as meeting the fans personally, I haven’t yet. I’ve got a nice little following on Twitter, and most of them are previous ‘Stargate’ fans as well as ‘SGU’ fans, and they’ve been nothing but lovely. I’m going to the London Expo next week around the 30th, or 28th through 29th of May, and that’s the first time I’ll be interacting face to face with fans, other than Comic-Con last year.

See MUCH More here

I’m really disappointed about the Game of Thrones recast. I thought Tazmin Merchant was the perfect Dany. There are quite of few brunette actors who are playing characters that are supposed to be blond, so I hope they dye their hair or give them wigs. The Cape looks pretty good though, I’m excited about the new TV shows coming out. Lots more Sci Fi :)

Will you go see the True Blood premiere in theaters? What new show are you mot looking forward to?

RIVERWORLD IS ALL WET

Source: tor.com

Monday night, SyFy premiered Riverworld, a four-hour miniseries based on the series of novels by Philip José Farmer. The novels chronicled the adventures of those resurrected after death, living on a cultivated river-planet overseen by extraterrestrial powers.

SyFy is notorious for hilariously abysmal weekly movies. Their miniseries have fared a little better from additional time and care—not that this tempers the glee with which they can throw a decent cast into a cauldron of plot soup for four hours. (Lookin’ at you, Tin Man, and Alice, and Children of Dune, and…)

With Riverworld, SyFy was more ambitious, and this backdoor pilot is a full-on narrative bouillabaisse, thick with confusion and seasoned with questionable overtones. (Mmm, soup metaphor.)

WHAT ARE THE NEW GENRE SERIES CHANCES?

Source: airlockalpha.com

Pilot season fast approaches and word from Hollywood is leaking out about the chances for the new genre series.

The announcements of new series and the network’s preliminary fall schedules will occur in what is called the upfronts. The upfronts are when these revelations are made to the advertisers, so they have a chance to buy commercials for the new shows.

In 2010, the networks upfront meetings are:

May 17 – NBC
May 17 – Fox
May 18 – ABC
May 19 – CBS
May 20 – The CW

Now on to the chances for our genre series as found at deadline.com:

At Fox, the Stephen Spielberg show “Terra Nova” has gained ground. Peter Chernin’s company has a series commitment deal with Fox, and it appears this show will fill the bill. It looks good for a mid-season launch. The interesting thing about this show is it appears star power and deals are pushing it to the air, not a pilot.

‘ICE AND FIRE’ AUTHOR TALKS ABOUT NEW HBO SHOW

Source: mcccagora.com

New York Times best-selling author George R.R. Martin took a reprieve from writing his newest novel to be a guest at the Chicago Comic and Entertainment Expo this past weekend.

Martin, known most for his fantasy novel series “A Song of Ice and Fire,” sat at the Avatar Press booth for the weekend-long convention to promote the comic adaption of his 1982 novel, “Fevre Dream.”

While on the show floor, Martin was able to talk about the television adaption of “Game of Thrones,” his first novel in the Ice and Fire series.

“HBO has picked us up for one season, so far, at 10 episodes,” Martin said. “We made the pilot; it was shot last fall, and it’s been in post-production ever since.”

Martin admitted the impossibility of including every detail from the 674-page novel.

“You can’t get every word or every line of dialog, or even every character in,” he said. “But 10 hours is a lot of time, so we hope to be able to capture most of it. From what I’ve seen so far, it’s going to be quite faithful to the books.”

‘TRUE BLOOD’ , DEXTER , ‘GAME OF THRONES’ TV BRINGS BIG SUCCESS TO BOOKS

Source: variety.com

Now that HBO has greenlighted the new series “Game of Thrones,” it’s not just TV execs who are hoping for the next “True Blood.”

Also keeping their fingers crossed are the folks at Bantam Spectra Books, the Random House imprint that publishes “A Song of Ice and Fire,” the George R.R. Martin book series that inspired the skein.

There’s good reason to get hopes up. On the evidence of not only “True Blood” but other book series-to-smallscreen transfers such as “The Vampire Diaries” and “Dexter,” a link to a larger, high-profile entertainment property has big benefits on the publishing side of the equation.

“I would love it to be a repeat of what happened with ‘True Blood,’?” said Bantam Books publisher Nita Taublib.

Thanks to that HBO vampire skein — which averaged 12.6 million viewers in its second season — Charlaine Harris, the longtime author who pens the ongoing series of Sookie Stackhouse novels on which “True Blood” is based, saw her popularity surge.

The confession time with Karolina_Avalon continues – I always dread it when my favourite book/ movie is turned into a tv show or movie – seriously DREAD it.  I also have a little, tweeny weeny prejudice to those who like a tv show better than a book – I don’t mind if they like aspects of the show better – but not if they like the show and that’s it. But – I love that shows can get people reading.  Confessions of a book snob!

How do you feel about books becoming tv shows? Are there some shows that have drawn you to books?

MIKE THE PIKE SECURES ACCLAIMED PRODUCER FOR GEORGE R.R. MARTIN’S ‘THE SKIN TRADE’

Mike The Pike Productions, Inc. and Oscar Award contender Ryan Colucci, have entered into a partnership agreement securing Colucci as a Co-Producer on the screen adaptation of George R.R. Martin’s “The Skin Trade.” The werewolf novella, recently optioned by Mike the Pike Productions, is described by Newbauer and Colucci as “‘Silence of the Lambs’ meets ‘The Howling,’ that said, the story itself is something one could only expect from the mind of world-renown, award-winning fantasy author, George R.R. Martin.”

“We couldn’t be happier to have signed Ryan to the team for ‘Skin Trade,’”says Mark B. Newbauer, CEO/President of Mike the Pike Productions. “This is quite a coup for MTP and its shareholders as Ryan is more than a producer by title; He’s an accomplished producer with solid industry deals and contacts in every aspect of the industry.

CLASH OF THE TITANS ON SET: BUBO, BLACK PEGASUS AND F-BOMBS

We went to the set of Louis Leterrier’s upcoming reboot of the classic mythology movie Class of the Titans last summer, and one thing we took away from it is this: It definitely isn’t a straight remake.

Oh, there’s Perseus (played by Sam Worthington), a cool new Medusa, a cool new Kraken, Andromeda (Alexa Davalos) and lots of sword-fighting.

But there’s also cooler versions of the giant scorpions, bat-winged harpies, eyeless Stygian witches and tons of new monsters, and Zeus (Liam Neeson) doesn’t wear a white, diaphanous woman’s gown: He wears armor, as befits the king of the gods.

And what about Bubo, the mechanical owl? He’s in it. But not for long.

The How To Train Your Dragon Featurette was quite amusing. Definately got me interested in the film. What did you think?

‘Human’ sounds interesting. I wonder how that story line will play out? A werewolf turning into a man. What’s so wrong with that? Maybe he doesn’t want to be human. Who knows.  We need more information before commenting further. What are your thoughts?

Adding yourself to trailers or videos, related to movies, are cool. Once. Other than that…meh. Now, if they made an interactive game instead, say with different endings depending on which route you take, then that would be something. Especially with a movie like The Crazies. Run from the psychos QUICK! (Sound effects play…”Sorry, you got caught…you have been hacked to death with an axe. Please try again”.) Give me some of that action.

I knew it would happen. As soon as The Wolfman was released, I just knew we’d see more and more werewolf movies popping up. 2010 is the Year of the Werewolf. Vampires had their day in the sun, well…their day in the night…last year. They’ve been kicked to the cold dirt. Do you think werewolves will have the same appeal as vampires still do?  Skin Trade sounds awesome if it will in fact be like Silence of the Lambs meets The Howling.

I’m trying not to read too much on Clash of the Titans. This article give a lot of insights on certain scenes. I want to be surprised by creatures and what happens. Do pour over every article about a film you’re waiting to see? Or would you rather be surprised and just look at the cool posters as a teaser?
