AN EX-TIME LORD AND A WANNA BE SUPERHERO TO TAKE ON VAMPIRES

Source: indiemoviesonline.com

David Tennant, the former Doctor from hit sci-fi TV show Doctor Who; and current go-to guy for anything requiring a comic-voiced geek Christopher Mintz-Plasse have joined the remake of the vampire-next-door comedy-horror, Fright Night.

Set in Las Vegas, Fright Night sees teenager Charley Brewster (Anton Yelchin) convinced his neighbor Jerry Dandrige (Colin Farrell) is a vampire when his mother (Toni Collette) falls under his spell.

HeatVision is reporting that Tennant, whose acting life for the past five years has mainly consisted of time-travel via a blue police box (but who was briefly attached to Burke and Hare before Andy Serkis) is set to play Peter Vincent (named after Peter Cushing and Vincent Price), the useless vampire-killer, movie star and host of local, late-night TV show Fright Night (the role was played by Roddy McDowall first time around). This will be Tennant’s first proper US release (except for his smallish part in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire) so this reporter is pleased to see there is life after the TARDIS. (Fun fact: At the end of the original movie Peter continues Fright Night but moves from covering vampires to aliens, something Tennant is already familiar with.)

WAS THE GREEN LANTERN RING DESIGN CHANGED FOR THE UPCOMING MOVIE?

Source: comicbookmovie.com

Over the past several months, we’ve seen images that allude to a change in the ring design being used for Martin Capbell’s Green Lantern film. The first being the revamped Lantern logo, which has a bejeweled center with a textured, metallic surrounding. The second being the newly revealed promotional artwork from Warner Bros. Consumer Products division; a homage to the popular Green Lantern comic cover pose.

This design has divided fans evenly. There are those who like the movie version of the ring and feel it will translate well to film; while others consider it a design failure that doesn’t respect the source material, pointing out it’s similarity to Green Lantern Kyle Rayner’s ring or the Corps Honor Guard as apposed to the rounded-ring Hal Jordan wears in the modern comics. Though the ring may be “new” to some fans’ eyes, it most definitely is not new to Green Lantern comics. As a matter of fact, that design is over 20 years old!

Below you’ll find images, courtesy of SHH poster Mondragon, that reveal the origin of the movie ring. It appears the production designers dug into the archives to use the Neal Adams/Mike Grell comics run from the mid-1970s as a basis for Hal Jordan’s intergalactic weapon:

FRIGHT NIGHT GETS IT’S DIRECTOR

Another day, another remake. The 1985 camp cult hit Fright Night is getting a makeover and now the project has finally got a director according to the LA Times.

Though still in negotiations, it looks like Craig Gillespie will be taking on directing duties. The movie will take him well out of his comfort zone as his last film was odd rom-com Lars and the Real Girl and a few episodes of US TV comedy United States of Tara.

Thoughts on today’s news?

Are you a fan of Thor? I think they should have cast Alexander Skarsgård, but who am I to say.

I having been paying much attention to all the Last Airbender news, usually when this happens I really like the movie. We’ll see. Will you be seeing the film? Do you think Shyamalan will break out of his seemingly ‘critics-pan-everything-he-made-after-Sixth-Sense’ curse?

What do you think of a Fright Night remake? Are there no original horror stories left to be made? Do you think Hollywood is just taking the easy route and recycling stories?

No Dark Tower For J.J. Abrams

I keep thinking that the idea that J.J. Abrams and Damon Lindelof would be adapting Stephen King’s epic Dark Tower series was commonly understood as a dead deal. The last time Lindelof spoke about the project, in October, seemed pretty definitive: “My guess is they will get made because they’re so incredible. But not by me.” Now J.J. Abrams has weighed in on the subject with his own statement that is sure to crush the hearts of hopeful King fans everywhere.
MTV spoke to Abrams, who said “The Dark Tower thing is tricky. It’s such an important piece of writing. The truth is that Damon and I are not looking at that right now.”

I’ll take issue with ‘important’, but ‘tricky’ is definitely right. This is a story that very much lives on the page, and to put it on screen would have required an insane commitment, either to make multiple films or a long television show. I would have been intrigued to see how that worked out — I’m always fascinated by super-ambitious adaptations — but not all that optimistic. Creating a successful movie or television series on the scale The Dark Tower, even with King’s large readership to (possibly) rely on, seems like a real long shot.

Nothing is sacred: Fright Night is being remade!

(from scifiwire.com) Goodbye cigarette-smoking, martini-drinking admen—hello bloodsucking, garlic-hating vampires!

Marti Noxon, writer-producer on the critically acclaimed Mad Men, has been hired to script a remake of Fright Night for DreamWorks, according to The Hollywood Reporter. But before you get all WTF, remember that Noxon was also writer-producer on both Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel, so it’s actually a return to her roots.

The original Fright Night, released in 1985, starred Chris Sarandon, Roddy McDowall and William Ragsdale, with Ragsdale playing a teenager who discovers his neighbors are vampires.

We’d normally be worried about tampering with a horror classic, but since Noxon has entertained us with both teens and vampires before, consider us cautiously hopeful.

Bad Movies Done Right — Love and Vampires

Just when you thought it was safe to take off that turtleneck sweater and put away your garlic, Twilight, Stephanie Meyer’s blockbuster series of novels for young adults, has taken the nation’s tweens by storm.

This month, the book series turned movie blockbuster continues its reign across a multimedia battleground with the release of New Moon, the second film in the Twilight franchise.

The films stars Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson as two teenaged lovers torn apart by the fact that one of them is really a distant relative of Count Chocula. While Twilight might have a legion of screaming teenaged girls behind it, it is not the only choice when it comes to teenage vampire films.

Last year’s Let the Right One In, a Swedish film based on the novel of the same name, may not have a cast of unreasonably beautiful people acting in it or a trendy soundtrack populated with even trendier musical acts, but the tender story about a 12-year-old boy’s relationship with a vampire girl still manages to have more heart and soul then the last ten years’ worth of vampire movies combined.

Both Twilight and Let the Right One In are warning signs, though, to a larger danger.

There seems to be a problem among today’s youth in detecting vampires in their midst. With Buffy the Vampire Slayer having been off the air for over five years now, who are our children turning to for advice in spotting bloodsuckers?
