CANADIAN CAFE OWNER CLAIMS AVATAR WAS HIS IDEA
Source: scifiwire.com
f you make the highest-grossing movie of all time (even if you don’t win big Oscars), you’re going to get sued by someone, and in the case of Avatar, it’s by a guy who runs a cafe in Vancouver, Canada.
No, really: This guy, Emil Malak, told the Vancouver Sun that he’s filing a copyright infringement suit against Cameron, claiming that the writer/director stole not only the story, but also the designs from Malak’s proposed movie…

Geez – can anyone else smell a FB page in the making? I always smile when people try to claim that an idea that has been used for a movie is theirs – with artistic forms of expression it’s always quite a tenuous subject. What do you think? Why do you think these people are suddenly attacking Mr Cameron? Just the money, or could there be a kernel of truth in the claims?
Also – Hee to William Shatner ant the myouterspace page! There’s a video from Mr Shatner himself too, speaking about the site. Are you going to join?

3D:SOON COMING AT YA’ AT HOME
Source: CBS News
It seems some things never change in Hollywood. For 82 years of Academy Awards there’s always the flash … the fashions … the royalty … the scene stealers … the showdown.
This year the buzz is about the nail-biting faceoff between Kathryn Bigelow, director of the indie war movie, “The Hurt Locker” … and her ex-husband, James Cameron, director of the all-time box office smash, “Avatar.”
But what really has Hollywood talking is thatm, win or lose, “Avatar” could change everything, with its breathtaking imagination and out-of-this-world imagery in eye-popping 3D.
“There are a number of films that have gone out and proved repeatedly that the market is there,” said director Cameron. “I think, you know, the verdict is pretty well in that 3D is here to stay. and that it’s a major boost to the, theatrical exhibition business.”
Jeffrey Katzenberg, CEO of Dreamworks Animation, calls the success of Cameron’s 3D gamble “thrilling.”
“I can’t think of a more inspiring event to happen for the movie business in a decade than ‘Avatar,’” he said.
“How to Train Your Dragon,” Dreamworks Animation’s next big release, is in 3D. In fact, all of the studio’s releases from now on will be in 3D.

AAAAAAAAAAAaaaaaaaaaaaaAAAAAAAAAAAAAAhhhhhhhhhhhHHHHHH. Death by 3-d! While 3-d is cool, and fun – I kind of view it like chocolate, or wine – lovely for a treat – but too much and it gives you a headache. Plus, there are people who can’t see 3-d, due to eyesight (okay, there’s more to it than that – but I’m not about to go into a tirade, I promise). And, how far are we going to go with this? I’m not sure I want to watch the news in 3-d – no matter how cool that looked on the Jetsons when I was a kid. What do you all think?

MOVIE NEWS FOR MARCH 5- THE SECRET OF KELLS, AVATAR AND GUY RITCHIE
Author: k.avalon | Filed under: Movie News, News BlogOUTSIDE THE ABBEY’S FORTIFIED WALLS, A WORLD OF FAIRY GIRLS AND BEASTS
Source: NY times
There is a lot to look at in “The Secret of Kells.” Nearly every frame of this 75-minute animated feature is dense with curlicued and cross-hatched patterns and figures. Your eye travels over Celtic crosses and through forest glades, studies architectural schematics and drinks in delicately washed landscapes. The human characters come in a variety of shapes and hues. Some are cute, some are sinister, some angular, some roly-poly. A few resemble science-fiction robots, while others look like pixies out of Japanese anime.

SHERLOCK DIRECTOR TO TURN KING ARTHUR INTO STAR WARS
Source: scifiwire.com
Here’s an intriguing rumor: Guy Ritchie, the former Mr. Madonna who directed the action hit Sherlock Holmes, is supposedly attached to direct a new version of Excalibur, the King Arthur story, “in the tone of Star Wars.”

I think I’m a bit numb about the possible new version of Excalibur. I love the Arthurian Legend – and I like retellings of it. But, I loved John Boorman’s movie, and make no secret of loving BBC’s Merlin. I don’t know if I could take another retelling. And, in a Star Wars tone? What does that mean? Of course this is all just speculation at the moment, and it is Guy Ritchie. What do you all think?
‘The secret of Kells” looks really awesome. Has any one seen it, or going to?

WHAT WORKS, WHAT SUCKS AND WHAT’S COMING FOR 11 HORROR REMAKES!
Source : scifiwire.com
According to Hollywood’s logic, anything worth doing is worth doing over again—especially if people remember you did it the first time.
Sequels notwithstanding, the studios are churning out one remake, reboot or “re-imagining” after another of familiar and not-so-familiar horror movies and franchises, the latest of which is The Crazies, Breck Eisner’s update of the 1973 George Romero movie of the same name.
While the jury’s still out on A Nightmare on Elm Street—which probably qualifies as the Holy Grail of horror remakes—SCI FI Wire decided to take a closer look at some of the other classic horror films that will return to the screen in the not-so-distant future and why the originals deserve to stand on their own.

VIDEO GAME INCURSION INTO HOLLYWOOD COULD CONTINUE WITH SPACE INVADERS
Source: LA Times
With a movie version of Missile Command essentially set up at Fox and an adaptation of Asteroids in development at Universal, it was only a matter of time before a studio decided to take on the grandfather of all video games, Space Invaders.
And now it looks like one could.
Warner Bros. is negotiating to acquire feature rights to the landmark shooter from Taito, the Japanese company that originally manufactured the game. If the rights issues all work out, the project would bring on Hollywood fixtures Mark Gordon, Jason Blum and Guymon Casady as producers.
Gordon is a film veteran with experience at the big-budget art house (“Saving Private Ryan”) as well as the big-budget commercial (“The Day After Tomorrow”). Blum is best known for producing horror breakout “Paranormal Activity,” while Casady is a manager-producer with a slew of high-profile clients.

JAMES CAMERON IS LOOKING FOR A FANTASTIC DIRECTOR
Source : Latino Review
James Cameron has finished his script for a remake of the classic science fiction fantasy film Fantastic Voyage.
I haven’t seen the original Fantastic Voyage since I was a kid so I have no idea what could be done for the remake. I’ll have to revisit it. ScifiWire has more on the story:
James Cameron said that the script for his proposed remake of the classic 1960s medical sci-fi movie Fantastic Voyage is done and he is now looking for someone to direct.
“Fantastic Voyage, we’re looking for a director,” Cameron said in a group interview Sunday in Century City, Calif., at the Visual Effects Society Awards. “Haven’t set one yet.” (Writers who have had a hand in drafting the script include Shane Salerno and Cormac and Marianne Wibberley.)

SAM WORTHINGTON , NEW FACE OF SCIFI/FANTASY FILM: WITH TERMINATOR, AVATAR, AND CLASH OF THE TITANS, A NEW STAR RISES
Source: scififantasyfilms.suite101.com
There’s no doubt Sam Worthington is one of Hollywood’s hottest stars. With Clash of the Titans to be released April 2, 2010, those who still don’t know him soon will.
In all honesty, I wasn’t too happy when my editor sent me off to watch Ondine. Personally I find it hard to see anything appealing about Colin Farrell – apart from his roguish good looks of course (I’m only human).
But after watching his latest effort, I’d like to take this opportunity to say that I’ve completely changed my mind – I now love him.

BOMBSHELL DROPPED ON JAMES CAMERON’S NEXT POTENTIAL FILM PLUS NEW DETAILS ON AVATAR SEQUEL
Source: Collider.com
As we reported at the start of this year , James Cameron was in talks with Last Train to Hiroshima author “Dr.” Charles Pellegrino to work on adapting the literature. Quotations are used on Mr. Pellegrino’s title because he is now under suspicion of fraud. According to an article by the Associated Press, Pellegrino may have taken some creative liberties with his book, but possibly his own educational background as well.
In other Cameron news, the director provided some new details about the sequel for Avatar. Hit the jump for more on both stories.
As reported by the AP, Pellegrino’s sources of information used in the book may have been fabricated.

JAMES CAMERON: DON’T CALL IT AVATAR 2, HERE’S THE NEW TITLE
Source: scifiwire.com
Sort of. Director James Cameron says it makes no sense to call the follow-up to his megahit 3-D sci-fi movie Avatar 2 and offers up a few details about what he wants for the sequel. (Spoilers ahead!)
Not only would Avatar 2 be an unoriginal name, it wouldn’t actually fit: The original movie ended with Jake (Sam Worthington) becoming an actual Na’vi, so he’s no longer an avatar.
“Certainly I don’t want to call it Avatar 2,” Cameron said at the Visual Effects Society Awards ceremony in Century City, Calif., on Sunday, where he was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award. “He’s not an avatar anymore, is he? Maybe we’ll call it Na’vi.”

The master of disaster, director Roland Emmerich (2012, The Day After Tomorrow), is still waiting for a complete script for his proposed film version of Isaac Asimov’s Foundation series but says now that he will take a page from James Cameron’s Avatar when he finally gets down to making the movie as a 3-D CG epic.
“I want to create everything,” Emmerich told Empire. “I want it to be a full CG film, so [performance capture] is perfect for that.”

ZACH SNYDER’S GUARDIANS OF GA’HOOLE RETITLED LEGEND OF THE GUARDIANS
Source: Slashfilm.com
Warner Bros./Village Roadshow Pictures have decided to give Zack Snyder’s animated adaptation of the popular children’s book series Guardians of Ga’Hoole a new title: Legend of the Guardians. The new title is aimed at those who might not understand what a “Ga’Hoole” is or means. And while it may be easier for people to pronounce and understand, for me the new title comes off a bit generic-sounding.

MOVIE NEWS FOR FEB 28TH: TRON LEGACY, SUPERMAN, & 3-D REVOLUTION
Author: Chris54 | Filed under: News BlogLight Cycles, Disc-Fu Juice Tron Legacy Trailer
Both Tron Legacy director Joseph Kosinski and original Tron helmer Steven Lisberger were on hand to introduce the two-minute trailer, screened in an Imax theater here as part of an ongoing viral promotion for the movie. Kosinski called his sequel the “first movie in which an actor plays against a younger version of himself,” alluding to Jeff Bridges reprising his role of Kevin Flynn alongside a digital re-creation of his younger self.

Lisberger, responding to a fan’s fear that Tron Legacy wouldn’t be the Tron sequel the faithful had been waiting for said: “We should all be really glad that it happened.”
“It’ll be great,” he reassured the crowd’s skeptics.
Tron Legacy, due in theaters Dec. 17, is the 3-D sequel to the pioneering 1982 film about a videogame programmer that finds himself trapped in a virtual world of his own creation. The original is best known for its computer-generated action sequences — a rarity at the time — and its bold neon look.
First impressions: Tron Legacy trailer
The Tron Legacy trailer opens with the traditional view of the studio’s logo — an image of Cinderella’s Castle from Disneyland — except altered tastefully with an effect resembling scan lines. As the preview unspools, we’re introduced to Garrett Hedlund riding his Ducati through city streets. It’s a not-so-subtle setup for his character’s proficiency on a light cycle.
Hedlund plays Sam Flynn, son of missing programmer Kevin Flynn. Bruce Boxleitner, revisiting his role as Alan Bradley, acts as the de facto narrator of the trailer. He’s cluing Sam in to his father’s whereabouts, suggesting that Flynn was onto something revolutionary before he dropped off the face of the earth.

More Dark Knight Talent Arrives to Save Superman
The co-writer of The Dark Knight has been officially confirmed as a scribe for the next Superman movie.
It looks like Warner really wants to make its next Superman movie a success on par with The Dark Knight, and is using top talent from the Batman reboot to do so. After bringing on Dark Knight director Christoper Nolan as a guiding light, Warner Bros. has now also hired David S. Goyer, co-writer on The Dark Knight, to pen Superman’s next theatrical tale.
The movie’s current title is planned to be The Man of Steel. It won’t be an origin story, which is a good thing, because everybody across all dimensions, even those without Superman in them, already knows the origin of the world’s greatest hero.

People who know will tell you that there are 3 guys in Hollywood I would cut a finger off to hang out with and make a project with, Joss Whedon is one of those guys. Unfortunately I am not a hot, sexy short girl with brown or blond hair, which immediately exnays me from his radar being that he tends to make feminist hero type projects. Dollhouse was doomed from the start by lack of audience and Fox never showing faith in the project, that being said it was still pure Whedon, meaning it was ambitious as hell.
Now it looks like Whedon and “Dollhouse” star Eliza Dushku will be reteaming again for another feature project. Found on the gossip site Hollywood Life (via FirstShowing) is a quote from Dushku, “I would say that we would [be working on something new very soon]!” “I think we’re going to work on a kickass feature together that we’ve been thinking about for a few years.”
Immediately sites are thinking it is Whedon’s Goners project that has been talked about for awhile and was set up at Universal. What is Whedon’s Goners?
The movie has been dubbed as a fantasy thriller, with Whedon saying, “it is pretty dark and it’s all me. So people will pretty much know what that means if they look at my body of work. But it’s a new universe set in the present day with a new concept for me and a new bunch of characters. It’s been a long time since I got to do that, so that’s really fun.”

3D revolution is here to stay, says Avatar creator
Cinema’s master of escapism says the era of 3D is upon us.
James Cameron, on the Gold Coast to promote his Australian feature epic Sanctum, says audiences now thirst an enhanced reality, rather than fantasy.
“Everything is going to change in the next couple of years, very, very rapidly,” Cameron says.
He says sports, even soap operas, will soon be streamed into homes across the globe in 3D.
“The sets are available – they’ll be expensive at first, but they’ll come down, just like HD [high definition]. Everything will be with [3D] glasses initially, but I’d say within three to five years we will dispense with the glasses … and that will allow us to have laptops and small portable devices and iPhones all in 3D.”
He compares this seismic adjustment to the emergence of colour television.
“If you look at the history of colour – colour took a long time to become the rule; first it was the exception; then it became the rule in movies only when the colour television set was introduced.
“For the last 10 years, or at least certainly for the last five or six years, there’s been more [3D] content than there has been screens. People were making 3D films at a rate faster than the exhibitors were adopting the technology in the theatres.
“I’ve been talking to these people for the past five years, saying, ‘What’s you 3D strategy?’ and everybody’s eyes have been glazed over, thinking that this is something that might come in 20 years and now it’s banging on the door.”
