OBS RECAP & REVIEW: SUPERNATURAL S5 – EPISODE 4
Author: Chris54 | Filed under: News Blog, TV Recap & ReviewOBS staff member Firebrand has brought us our weekly R&R of ‘Supernatural’
In order to understand last night’s episode we must quickly look to the past. Two previous episodes in the series dealt with issues that crop up agian in this episode.

Season 1, Episode 20 “Dead Man’s Blood”
A vampire hunter is murdered in Manning, Colorado, and John Winchester shows up to solve the case. John discovers the vampires have stolen an antique gun, a Colt revolver that John has been searching for. When loaded with its accompanying special bullets, it has the power to kill anything, natural or supernatural, and John intends to use it on the demon that killed his wife. After they seize the Colt,Sam and Dean father tests its power on a vampire. The Colt makes many appearances throughout the series. The one thing is that at the end of last season it is inferred that the Colt has been lost, destroyed, yet apparently we find out in “The End” that Demons have it and have been hiding it.
Season 2, Episode 9 “Croatoan”
Sam and Dean go to a town called Rivergrove after Sam has a very powerful vision. They think demons are trying to wipe out the entire town from the inside out through possession, however it turns out to be a blood-transmitted virus that turns people violent and drives them to infect others (similar to zombies). Written on a telephone pole is the word “Croatoan”. The first British settlement in the New World (Roanoake, Virginia) was found deserted in 1587 and the only signs of anyone was the word “Croatoan” scratched into a fence post. No one was ever found. The inferrence here is that perhaps Demons were involved evebn that long ago. Sam gets attacked and infected, but is apparently immune to the virus, which seems to have been made for the purpose of testing him. For what reason could Sam be immune?
Season 5, Episode 4 “The End”
We kick off this episode with Dean, arriving in Kansas City, looking to crash after his last job. Castiel is talking to him, ona call no less, and he tells Dean that in order for him to truly KILL Lucifer, Dean will need the Colt. Dean tells Castiel to lay off for a few hours since he’s exhausted and he needs to sleep (as most humans do). Castiel agrees to stay away and Dean heads to bed. He gets awoken by a call from his brother. Sam has called because he needs to get back into the game and let Dean in on the new developements. As Lucifer’s potential vessel Sam has come to the realization that he will not be able to just fade away or disappear. Sam must stand up and be vindicated. He’s looking for Redemption. Dean decides to make an executive decision. He and Sam must stay apart. For good. Each pick a hemisphere and stick to it. He even compares them to the Fire and Oil of the Armegeddon. Sam is Dean’s achilles heel, as Dean is Sam’s, and Dean thinks it’s best they avoid each other and just hope to survive. Dean hangs up on Sam and goes to bed. He wakes up in Kansas City but it’s …… different.
Dean exits the hotel and enters a destroyed world. Kansas City is a ruined landscape. And deserted. He finds a little girl on an alley, not hiding but almost feral. She attack Dean, slicing his arm and he notices “Croatoan” written on the wall. Suddenly a swarm of possessed people converges on them and Dean is forced to flee. He races down the street, attempting not to get caught. Suddenly, after a wrong turn, it looks as though he may not make it out alive, and some soldiers show up. Dean dives for cover and all we know is that there’s a lot of gunfire. Next thing we see, it’s night time.
Dean pulls himself to safety, under a fence and he sees a military sign. It’s August 1, 2014. Nearly 5 years have passed and now what to do? Dean finds a vehicle (unfortunately not his beloved Impala) and heads out on the road. He’s joined by Zachariah, another angel who’s got a slightly less “free-will” approach than Castiel. This is the future of the world if Dean doesn’t allow Michael to use him as his vessel. It’s a destroyed planet with pockets of humans still remaining but pretty much hell on Earth. And it’s all Dean’s fault. After telling Dean he gets 3 days to “marinate” Zachariah leaves him.
