Review:

Shattered-DutySpecial Agent Levi Lazaro is on a mission, a mission that is his alone.  He is after the people responsible for his wife’s death. For the two years, since she died, he can think of nothing else but avenging her murder. He no longer cares what happens to himself. If he dies that is alright, as long as he takes those responsible with him. This single mindedness is what make him a good agent.  He will do whatever is necessary to finish the job he has been assigned. He will do anything he can to protect innocent people.

Special Agent Selene Wolfe is also very good at her job. She believes in the work that she does, ridding the world of terrorists. She knows that the world is full of bad people and good people need to be protected.  She is strong, smart, beautiful and driven. This is a deadly combination for the evil-doers in the world.

When Levi and Selena find themselves both chasing the same terrorist, neither wants to work together. Neither trusts the other.  Neither are very happy about the attraction that exists between them. Levi is angry that Selena awakens feeling inside of him that he was sure were dead and buried.  And then he feels guilt that he does have feelings for her. Selena knows that if she becomes involved with Levi, it will be a mistake. She knows he is a broken man with no room for love because he is so full of anger and thoughts of revenge. But whether they are happy about the feelings or not, the feelings are there and they must be dealt with.

The characters are well developed, well rounded and three dimensional. In my opinion, Levi and Selena are what made this book such a good one. Watching them struggle with their feelings and exploring the possibility of a future together is heartbreaking and heartwarming. This book is about healing, taking a second chance and ridding yourself of guilt. A good lesson for all of us to learn. I became so engrossed in the development of their relationship that at times I forgot I was reading a book and felt like I was watching a movie.

I also felt like I was watching a movie with all the action that took place. There are many twists and turns and the tension began building right from the start and never let go. The action was non-stop and at times I felt like I had to stop reading to catch my breath.  And there a couple of surprises at the end that I did not see coming but I thought they made the book even better. I really enjoyed that. The author is very talented in bringing the reader along for the ride of their life. The combination of creating realistic characters that feel very human and keeping the action level over the top makes Katie Reus an excellent author, in my opinion.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading a romantic action suspense. This is the first book that I have read by this author but I plan on getting more of her books to enjoy. This is the third book in the Deadly Ops series and I want to read the first two. Pick up a copy of Shattered Duty and see for yourself what a great book this is.
