No one does romantic suspense better than Jayne Ann Krentz. Now, the New York Times bestselling author of Trust No One and River Road delivers a novel that twists and turns into a read that will leave you breathless.

Madeline and Daphne were once as close as sisters—until a secret tore them apart. Now it might take them to their graves.

They knew his name, the man who tried to brutally attack twelve-year-old Madeline in her grandmother’s hotel. They thought they knew his fate. He wouldn’t be bothering them anymore…ever. Still their lives would never be the same.

Madeline has returned to Washington after her grandmother’s mysterious death. And at the old, abandoned hotel—a place she never wanted to see again—a dying man’s last words convey a warning: the secrets she and Daphne believed buried forever have been discovered.

Now, after almost two decades, Madeline and Daphne will be reunited in friendship and in fear. Unable to trust the local police, Madeline summons Jack Rayner, the hotel chain’s new security expert. Despite the secrets and mysteries that surround him, Jack is the only one she trusts…and wants.

Jack is no good at relationships but he does possess a specific skill set that includes a profoundly intimate understanding of warped and dangerous minds. With the assistance of Jack’s brother, Abe, a high-tech magician, the four of them will form an uneasy alliance against a killer who will stop at nothing to hide the truth…. (Goodreads)

Review:

Secret Sisters by Jayne Ann Krentz is a romantic suspense that is a great read.  Mystery, suspense, romance and intrigue are perfectly blended together to keep the reader turning page after page.

Madeline has returned to an abandoned hotel that her grandmother owned.  She has returned after her grandmother’s death to meet with the old caretaker of the hotel.  When she arrives, she finds that the caretaker has died, but not before he has warned her that things from the past have not been completely buried.  When her friend Daphne, returns to the island they are reunited after being apart for many years.  The two realize that two of the four people who knew of the long ago secret are dead.

Now they are worried that they may be next.  Madeline asks her security expert, Jack, for help in figuring out why the secret is being threatened with exposure, why now and who is killing the others off.

The characters are well developed, well rounded and three dimensional.  Madeline is a strong willed woman who has made something of herself, despite her troubled past.  Even though she is strong, she also has a softer side and a more vulnerable side that she would prefer others do not see.

Jack is a take charge type of guy who will not back down from a problem and will do what is needed to keep those he is in charge of safe.  He too has a softer side that he definitely wants to keep hidden.  Their personalities clash at times and their bickering and bantering are enjoyable to read.  They also have a chemistry between them that is hard to ignore.

The author is very talented in creating tension and suspense with just the written word.  This book is full of twists and turns and kept me guessing from the beginning of the book to the end.  The suspense is top notch and kept me awake late into the night, turning page after page, to see what was going to happen next.  There were a few times when I thought I had things figured out only to learn that I was totally off base.  I really enjoy when this happens, and it makes me enjoy a book even more.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted, well plotted mystery suspense.  I have read other books by this author and I have enjoyed them all.  In my opinion, Jayne Ann Krentz is one of the top authors in this genre.  Do yourself a favor and pick up this book, sit back and enjoy the roller coaster ride it will take you on.
