save-meSave Me by Kristyn Kusek Lewis is the story of Daphne Mitchell and her husband Owen.  Daphne and Owen have known each other since they were in summer camp together as children.  They lost track of each for many years and then they have a chance meeting and they rekindle their friendship.  And that friendship evolves into love and eventually leads to marriage.

Daphne feels like her life is near perfect.  She and Owen have great careers (they are both doctors), they are restoring a charming farmhouse and she is married to her best friend.  The only problem in her near perfect life is that they do not have any children.  Daphne is more than ready to begin a family but she can tell that Owen is not very open to the idea.  She does not know why he is reluctant but she knows it is putting a strain on their marriage.  And when Owen comes home late at night on his birthday and tells Daphne that he has had an affair, the marriage is not only strained but fractured.   Daphne is devastated and does not know what she can do to pull herself back together and save her marriage.

Daphne has a loving family and she goes away for the weekend to spend time with them and try to make sense of what has happened.  Her family is very supportive and they all have advice to give her to help her accept what has happened.  She also has a best friend who does not pull any punches when it comes to giving her advice.

While Daphne is visiting her family, Owen call her and tells her that the “other woman” has been in a terrible accident and that Owen needs Daphne with him for support.  Daphne does not hesitate to go to help Owen and this just complicates their situation even more.  To confuse matters even more, Daphne meets a very nice man, Andrew, a friend of her best friends husband.  She enjoys spending time with him but she feels like she is cheating on Owen.  Eventually Owen realizes the mistake he has made and wants Daphne back.  Daphne has many decisions to make and none of them will be easy.  Can her marriage be saved, and does she really want to save it?

This book is difficult to read at times because of the emotional turmoil that Daphne is in.  It is full of raw emotions and heartbreaking realizations that unfortunately face many people these days.  While reading this I kept asking myself what I would do and how I would feel if this was happening to me.  It is a book that makes you stop and think about your own life, and I think this is a good thing.  I think Save Me would be an excellent choice for a book club to read and discuss.   I can see lots of material and questions that could be asked and talked about.  The book is very relevant in today’s society.

The writing style flows easily and this book is a quick read.  The author is very talented in writing emotional realistic material and pulling the reader into the story and not letting you go.   With all the ups and downs in Daphne’s life I felt like I was on an emotional roller coaster.  I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading contemporary women’s fiction, especially if you like emotional reads.  This book is a clean thought-provoking read that is really quite good.
