Chapter 20 – Xenophilius Lovegood

Harry is feeling like their luck has finally changed and is re-energized to continue the hunt for the other Horcruxes. Ron explains that Voldemort’s name has been jinxed and saying it aloud will break all protective enchantments. Ron fills Harry in on things that have been happening while he’s been in hiding. They discuss the meaning behind Dumbledore’s gifts to them and why he would have given them things they don’t understand.

Ron brings out a radio and tells Harry and Hermione that there is an underground radio show that gives the news as it really is. It’s protected with a password and Ron doesn’t have it. But that doesn’t stop him from trying to guess the password. While reading The Life and Lies of Albus Dumbledore Hermione realizes that the A in Albus’ signature is the same symbol on the book The Tales of Beetle the Bard, the headstone in Godric’s Hollow and the necklace that Xenophilius Lovegood was wearing at the wedding. Harry is very hesitant to go, but Ron and Hermione out vote him.

After searching for a few hours they finally find the Lovegood home. Mr. Lovegood is very uncomfortable with letting them in his home, but eventually he allows them in. They go upstairs where the printing press is running, and he covers it from their view. At that moment Hermione discovers a highly explosive Erumpet horn on the wall. Mr Lovegood explains that its a Crumple-Horned Snorkack horn that he recently purchased from a young wizard that knew of his interest and it was a Christmas gift for Luna. Harry asks Mr Lovegood for his help and he tells them that helping Harry Potter is a very dangerous thing. At this point Hermione asks where Luna is and he tells them that she’s at the stream and he’ll go call for her. While gone, the trio notice the objects in the room, including a bust of a witch with a bizarre headdress. When he returns he has a tray of tea for all of them and he explains the purpose of the headdress. As they sit for tea, Hermione tells Mr. Lovegood that they are there to learn the meaning of the symbol and Mr Lovegood replies “Are you referring to the sign of the Deathly Hallows?”

CHAPTER 21 – The Tale of the Three Brothers
Hermione reads The Tale of the Three Brothers aloud from the book Dumbledore left her. It is the story of how three brothers cheated Death and he rewarded them with three gifts; an invisibility cloak, a stone that brings back the dead and a wand. Death was able to reclaim two of the brothers quickly since their gifts were selfish. But the third brother was wise and lived a long and full life. Harry and Ron begin to realize that the invisibility cloak that Harry has is the one talked about in the story. Harry reckons that if that is real then the wand and stone must also be real. Hermione realizes that the third brother is the Peverell that is buried in Godric’s Hollow.

While Mr Lovegood is fetching their dinner the trio begin discussing the new information and how it all ties together. Harry notices that there is a room above where they are standing and he goes to investigate. He finds that it is Luna’s room and that it has obviously been empty for weeks, possibly months. When Mr Lovegood returns they question where Luna is and he finally breaks down and tells them that she’s been captured because he’s been a supporter of Harry Potter. He thinks that if he turns in Harry that they will return Luna to him. He’s already alerted the Death Eaters. At that moment the Death Eaters arrive and Mr Lovegood shoots a stunning spell across the room at Harry. He misses and hits the Erumpet horn and it explodes. The entire house begins to crumble trapping Harry and Ron. Hermione acts fast covering Ron with the invisibility cloak (since he’s supposedly sick with spattergoit) and allows the Death Eaters to catch a quick glimpse of Harry just before they apparate. She wants them to know that Mr Lovegood really did have Harry so that they won’t hurt Luna.
