TV NEWS FOR DEC 24TH TRUE BLOOD, DR WHO & CHARACTERS WE’D LIKE TO REGIFT

True Blood Season 3 Casting Roundup

Production on HBO’s hit vampire series, True Blood, resumed early this month for its third season, which is set to air in summer 2010. Based on all the casting news that has been released for just the first few episodes, it looks like there will be plenty of newcomers. (Minor spoilers ahead)

Fans of Charlaine Harris’ books will be familiar with the werewolf Alcide Heveraux, another love interest for Anna Paquin’s Sookie. He will be played by actor Joe Manganiello.

Another werewolf will be played by Aussie actor Grant Bowler from Ugly Betty and Lost. His character, Coot, is the leader of a biker gang that tortures Bill and gets high on V.

We will also be meeting a few new vampires, including Russell, the vampire king of Mississippi. Denis O’Hare has been cast in this role–look for him to have issues with Evan Rachel Wood’s Queen Sophie-Anne. Russell has a boyfriend named Talbot, who was described in the casting call as being an “intensely beautiful vampire with an acerbic sense of humor who loves to cook despite vampires’ inherent lack of cooking talents.” Greece-born actor Theo Alexander will be playing Talbot.

It seems as though Tara is getting over her prejudice towards fangs (and her sadness over the death of Eggs) because she will be forming an instant connection with a sexy vampire named Franklin Mott. James Frain of The Tudors is taking on this role.

Eric will also find himself in a new romance, with Yvetta, a Czech dancer at Fangtasia. Natasha Alam, an actress from Uzbekistan who has appeared on several episodes of The Bold and the Beautiful, will be the much-envied woman sharing intimate moments with Alexander Skarsgard.

Doctor Who: David Tennant interview

That’s one of the things I’ve always wondered about the franchise: does The Doctor have the same feelings for people and things that he did before he regenerated? Does he have the same feelings for Sarah Jane that he did in the ’70s?

Not necessarily, but with Rose, he certainly did. Meeting Sarah Jane again was deeply moving for him, I think. And what was interesting there was, he, in a sense, has gotten younger. That’s The Doctor’s eternal problem: he will always outlive his earthbound friends. And that’s a great dramatic opportunity that you don’t get in normal drama. You’ve got this character who’s virtually immortal, certainly in terms of anyone from Earth, and how does that impact on those relationships? Even within a fantasy action/adventure scenario, you get to play these wonderful emotional beats. It’s unlike anything else.

How was it to film your last scene as The Doctor?

Emotional. Thrilling, because the scripts are so exciting. You finally get – this character that we do manage to explore, an emotional life for The Doctor that you might not necessarily expect. Essentially, he has to remain unchanged at the end of each story that the series carries on – but when you get to the point where this version of the character is going to die and he knows he’s going to die, the sands of time are running out and the bell is tolling and all those metaphors, you get to take this immutable character to mutable places, and that’s very exciting. And emotional, as well. The character’s coming to the end of his life, you’re coming to the end of your life on the show, which has been all-consuming. Particularly back home, but all over the world, it’s a huge deal. It’s very important to people, and particularly to me, all of my life. So to be moving on from that – and I know I’ll never say goodbye to it entirely; I’m sure The Doctor will travel with me as long as I’m on this earth – that’s very moving and emotional, and it was to film it.

TWoP 10: Characters We’d Like to Regift (The 2009 Edition)

10. Sam Trammell (True Blood)
Poor little Sam Merlotte. His storylines just aren’t as exciting when compared with the vampires and whatnot in Bon Temps, and the show seems to be adding more new characters by the minute. He’d be better off heading over to The Vampire Diaries, where his shape-shifter might fit in well. We’re sure that Mystic Falls could use a quaint new bar and grill.

5. Joseph Fiennes (FlashForward)
It’s not that Joseph Fiennes is a terrible actor, but he’s certainly not bringing his FlashForward character to life. He only makes one dopey facial expression and his character seems more obsessed with the possibility that his wife is going to cheat on him than with figuring out why millions of people died. Better to send him over to Mercy, where they specialize in lack of facial expressions. Maybe he could even become the McDreamy of that show.

2. Tom Welling (Smallville)
We vaguely recall a time when we tuned into this show because we liked seeing the adventures of Clark Kent, but that was so long ago. Now Clark is just there. We’d like to ship him off to Heroes, where he would fit in with the other dull people with super powers, and Smallville can turn into the Green Arrow show.

I am so excited for Season 3 of True Blood. The cast is shaping up and so far I’ve liked all their picks.

Aww Sam’s storyline isn’t that bad. I like him and I’ve enjoyed his storyline.

What do you think? Should Sam be regifted? And how do you feel about the cast of season 3 of True Blood?
