Kevin McCarthy, the actor best known as the star of “Invasion of the Body Snatchers,” the classic 1956 science-fiction film about humans taken over by giant seed pods from outer space, has died. He was 96.

He died Sept. 11 at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis, Massachusetts, the Los Angeles Times reported.

A versatile character actor with the chiseled jaw and blue eyes of a leading man, McCarthy was adept on stage, in movies and television shows. He acted in almost 100 films over seven decades and was a familiar presence on prime-time TV from the 1950s through the 1990s.

J.J. Abrams may create a new villain for the next Star Trek movie

Source: blastr.com

Filmmaker J.J. Abrams and writers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman talked about their plans for the next Star Trek movie, and while they remained maddeningly vague about it, they say there’s a very real possibility that we’ll see another new villain introduced to the franchise. The information comes from SFX magazine, which talked to the famous (or, to some, infamous) trio. These individual quotes come from TrekMovie and appear to be snippets from the print article.

Abrams: The universe that Roddenberry created was so vast. And so it’s hard to say there’s one particular thing that stands out as what the sequel must be. Which is on the one hand, a great opportunity. On the other hand it’s the greatest challenge – where do you go? What do you focus on? But I’m incredibly excited about the prospects.

Hollywoodnews.com: Early last year, as Mark Romanek was busy mounting his adaptation of Kazou Ishiguro’s beloved novel “Never Let Me Go,” the director received a four-word text informing him who would headline his film.

“We had trouble finding a Kathy. And Peter Rice, who was running [Fox] at the time, had seen ‘An Education’ in Sundance and sent me a text that said, ‘Hire the genius Mulligan.’ It’s true. And I asked him later why it was such a terse message, and he said that the movie wasn’t even finished yet. He texted it in the middle of the film,” Romanek said.

If you think that puts extra pressure on Mulligan as she assumes the role of Kathy – a delicate clone living a difficult life in an alternate existence – well, you’d be right.
