Synopsis:

Miriam is trying. Really, she is.

But this whole “settling down thing” that Louis has going for her just isn’t working out. She lives on Long Beach Island all year around. Her home is a run-down double-wide trailer. She works at a grocery store as a check-out girl. And her relationship with Louis–who’s on the road half the time in his truck–is subject to the piss and vinegar Miriam brings to everything she does.

It just isn’t going well. Still, she’s keeping her psychic ability–to see when and how someone is going to die just by touching them–in check. But even that feels wrong somehow. Like she’s keeping a tornado stoppered up in a tiny bottle.

Then comes one bad day that turns it all on her ear.

Review:

This book had me from the very first scene.

Miriam is a woman I can relate to. She’s sarcastic and feisty but she also has a tender side that makes you really like her. Louis is her ex-boyfriend that she still lives with. She can’t live with him and can’t live without him. Their lives are tied together too tightly ever since she both caused his death and saved his life. He is the only one that she can touch with out seeing his death because she’s already changed his fate.

Miriam has decided that she’s tired of living the way she has and makes the decision to leave Louis and strike out where ever Fate takes her. But as luck would have it Louis is the one that winds up picking her up on the road as she’s escaping the confines of the resort island she’s been living on. Louis tells her he has gotten her a ‘job’ doing a reading for a woman who thinks she’s dying but can’t get anyone to take her seriously. She finally gives in and agrees to do it.

The woman is a teacher at a girls reformatory school that seems more like a private academy for the rich and famous. While at the school, Miriam bumps into a young girl, Wren, and sees that she will be murdered in 5 years. After accidentally touching another student Miriam realizes she has stumbled into a serial murder mystery that hasn’t happened yet.  In the course of trying to untangle the complicated scheme, Miriam discovers that she isn’t alone in her abilities.

This was an amazing book that literally had me on edge until the end. I loved every minute of this book. I didn’t realize until I was reviewing this book that it is book #2 in a series. I didn’t feel as if I was missing part of the story at all.
