Summary

It’s Halloween in Pajaro Bay, and nine-year-old Oliver and his friends thought nothing could be more exciting than competing in the annual costume contest. But before the night is over, they find themselves far from the lights of the party, sneaking through the town’s haunted cemetery just one step ahead of the danger on their trail. Who knew three kids could create such a Halloween Hullabaloo?

Review

This is the first read by Barbara Cool Lee that I have read. The cover definitely had me hooked – a beautiful black cat and the title – Halloween Hullabaloo.  This is a short story about Oliver Knight and an older stray cat, Captain Jeffy.  Oliver becomes concerned when for the second day in a row he comes to feed Jeffy (something he has been doing for close to a month) and Jeffy is no where to be found.  Turns out Oliver’s concern is justified. Through this short read, we see Oliver and a couple of his friends search a local cemetery on Halloween to solve the mystery of the missing cats.

An enjoyable short read.  I found the style of the author easy to read and I was left feeling relatively satisfied with the story (something that is not always accomplished when I read short stories).  Barbara Cool Lee is worth another look at for a longer read.
