DEAREST_ROGUESynopsis:

HE CAN GUARD HER

Lady Phoebe Batten is pretty, vivacious, and yearning for a social life befitting the sister of a powerful duke. But because she is almost completely blind, her overprotective brother insists that she have an armed bodyguard by her side at all times-the very irritating Captain Trevillion.

FROM EVERY DANGER

Captain James Trevillion is proud, brooding, and cursed with a leg injury from his service in the King’s dragoons. Yet he can still shoot and ride like the devil, so watching over the distracting Lady Phoebe should be no problem at all-until she’s targeted by kidnappers.

BUT PASSION ITSELF

Caught in a deadly web of deceit, James must risk life and limb to save his charge from the lowest of cads-one who would force Lady Phoebe into a loveless marriage. But while they’re confined to close quarters for her safekeeping, Phoebe begins to see the tender man beneath the soldier’s hard exterior . . . and the possibility of a life-and love-she never imagined possible.

Review:

I loved this story. Not only did it have a plot with twists and turns that kept the reader fully engaged and page turning, but, the characters enveloped the reader into a world of power and deceit amongst the classes.

Lady Phoebe Batten is blind however it is not the blindness that she can’t cope with. Her brother the Duke is insanely overprotective and won’t allow her to go anywhere without an armed bodyguard. He has chosen Captain Trevillion to guard her, a person Phoebe finds irritating and annoyingly stiff and rigid in his attitude towards her. The reader wonders how she ever will be free to explore on her own with these two controlling men in her life. Deprived of having a “season” and with no hope of finding a mate she becomes more and more unhappy. Then attempts to kidnap her occur and Trevillion suddenly is seen in a different light. Thrown intimately together on one of these adventures she sees the “gentle and tender” person that is underneath his cold persona.  She falls in love with him but because of their age difference and class difference how can she stand up to her brother to allow her to live the life she desires and get Trevillion to love her in return?

Trevillion is an injured ex Dragoon guard who accepts the position to guard the Dukes sister because he feels it is the only job he is capable of. As he watches out for Phoebe’s well being he soon realizes that he will fight to the death to protect her.  He knows he is physically attracted to her but also knows that there is no way they can have a life together. As he spends time with her he sees her strengths, relinquishes his past to her and, relishes in her simple wants in life. Kidnapped for the 3rd time and with her life in danger Trevillion knows what he has to do and confronts the Duke.

This is historical romance at its best and I will be definitely looking for more books by Elizabeth Hoyt.
