OBS TOP 5/10: FANBOYS EDITION

Author: Staar84 | Filed under: News Blog, Top 5/10

Top 5 Movies/TV Shows about Fanboys-Erin

1) Spaced: From the very beginning the characters in this British TV show quote Star Wars and re-enact scenes from their favorite movies. It blends so seamlessly into the plot that sometimes you don’t even realize they’re references. One of the special features is an “homage-o-meter” that displays at the bottom of the screen what movie/tv show the scene is a reference to.

2) Fanboys: In 1999, a group of friends decide to drive from Ohio to Skywalker Ranch in California to steal a copy of Star Wars: The Phantom Menace 6 months before it hits theaters.

3) The Big Bang Theory: Sheldon wears superhero T-shirts in nearly every episode, they have a comic book night, and Wil Wheaton (Star Trek: TNG), Summer Glau (Firefly, The Sarah Conner Chronicles, Dollhouse), and have Katee Sackhoff (Battlestar Gallactica) been guests stars—making all the boys giddy.

4) Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back: The name says it all! Kevin Smith is a huge fanboy himself, and someday Silent Bob will successfully move something with his mind.

5) Futurama: Nearly every episode features a Star Trek reference, Leonard Nemoy was in the pilot, and George Takei has been in 2 episodes. The cast of The Original Series guest-starred together in a tribute episode titled “Where No Fan Has Gone Before”.

Top 5 Efforts to save a TV Show

Photobucket
Futurama: Nearly 11 years after it’s first episode aired, Futurama returns to the air waves. The original airing included 5 seasons (72 episodes total—what a normal show would do in 3-4 seasons). What resurrected the series was great dvd sales and 4 straight to dvd movies that sold in the millions, convincing Fox (who still owns the rights to the show) to commission a new 26 episode season. Luckily, cartoon characters age well.

Chuck: Fans purchased footlong sandwiches from product-placement sponsor Subway and wrote letters to NBC to get Chuck into a third season. Fan’s vigor got them into a fourth season as well.

Firefly: I still say that mishandling is the reason this show was cancelled after one season, and I think fans agree. Record dvd sales convinced Fox (hmm, I’m noticing a pattern here) to let Joss Whedon make the movie Serenity, which gave some closure for the Firefly characters. More details that would have been flushed out in episodes are coming out in comic form because the fanbase is so strong.

FlashForward: Fans staged a 2 minutes, 17 second “blackout” to protest the cancellation of the show outside ABC offices in the US, Canada, and the UK, as well as sending 20,000 friendship bracelets to executives. Unfortunately, the show wasn’t renewed.

The Sarah Connor Chronicles: After two season, Fox (Fox again) canceled the show. Fans rented movable billboards and created the “Save Cameron” campaign. Shockingly, (eh hem, sarcasm) Fox ignored their pleas

1. If you are tired of the same ol’ Vampire, Zombie or Wolf story than “The Immortals” series will be like a breath of fresh air.

2. The series has the always intriguing ‘love triangle’ – with two irresistible male characters ;)

3. Alyson Noel took a lot of time to research all the facts. In the novels, she introduces aura’s, mind-reading, physic powers, spell casting, manifesting and more! All of which is based on the facts, and how they are all truly practiced..nothing phony here!

4. The characters of Miles, Romie & Rayne, and Roman are very entertaining and keep this dark story, very comical and interesting. You are always on the edge of your seat, guessing what is going to happen next!

5. Hello! Immortals are awesome, even better is the past lives of all the characters and how the entwine.

TOP 5/10: FUTURAMA EDITION

Author: Staar84 | Filed under: News Blog, Top 5/10

New episodes start day after tomorrow(!!!) To hold you over, we have our top 10 lists, Futurama style.

Top 10 Futurama Episodes-Erin

1. Roswell That Ends Well: I’m not the only one who loved this episode, Futurama won an Emmy for this one. After a freak accident, Fry, Leela, the Professor, Bender and Zoidberg are sent back in time to 1947 and find out what really happened in Roswell, NM that year…

2. The Why of Fry: This episode explains why Fry is the way he is, and why that matters. Plus the best line of the whole series is in this episode (Please don’t be offended): “FRY: ‘So I really am important? How I feel when I’m drunk is correct?’ NIBBLONIAN: ‘Yes, except Dave Matthews doesn’t rock.”

3. Parasites Lost: Fry eats an egg salad sandwich from a truckstop bathroom and gets worms. In order to get them out, they crew goes inside his body (literally, as mini robots) to fight them off. Remember that episode of The Magic School Bus where they go inside Ralphie? Like that, but way funnier.

4. Spanish Fry: While camping Fry is abducted by aliens who take his nose, which is sold on the black market as an aphrodisiac. Fry, Bender and Leela try to get it back from the alien who bought it trying to solve his marriage issues. When the alien who bought realizes that’s not a humans, um, “love muscle”, he decides to take the right one. And Fry tries to help them get their marriage back on track to save his “human horn”. WOO!

5. The Devil’s Hands are Idle Playthings: The series finale ended with a bang; or rather, an opera. Fry makes a deal with the (robot) devil to win Leela’s heart, and it ends in hilarious song.

6. Anthology of Interest II: Three mini episodes featuring the “What-if” machine give us a view of life were more like a video game (with the military run by Gen. Colin Pacman), what it would be like if Bender were human, and a Wizard of Oz spoof.

7. The Problem with Popplers: While on a mission, the crew runs out of food. They find a planet with tons of little things that turn out to be delicious. They take them home and start selling them. But the Omicronians aren’t happy about it…

8. The Farnsworth Parabox: The Professor creates a box with a parallel universe inside, and the other versions of all the characters interact with…themselves.

9. Amazon Women in the Mood: Leela and Amy double date with Zapp Brannigan and Kif, and Zapp manages to crash the resturant into a planet inhabited by Amazon women and their leader, Femputer. The men died out years ago and they’re very happy to see Zapp, Kif and Fry (since he and Bender came to rescue the girls.) Guest staring Bea Arthur as Femputer.

10. Love and Rocket: After a personality “upgrade” to the Planet Express ship, she and Bender start dating. Guest starring Sigourney Weaver, the episode is an homage to “2001: A Space Odyssey”. Besides, how often do you get to hear the phrase “quantum singularity” in comedy?
