Welcome to the Movie Posters

Brought to you by OBS Staff member Katie

Here at Open Book Society we like to see things from every angle. Movie posters are what sells people’s opinions of a film and like a book cover it has to be appealing. Also like books, movie posters can look differently depending on where they are made. Whole campaigns revolve around films, everything from viral web content to poster’s for every character in the movie.

The film is set in a mythical world of Vikings and dragons. The story centers around a viking teenager named Hiccup, who lives on the island of Berk, where fighting dragons is a way of life. The teen’s smarts and offbeat sense of humor is disliked by his tribe and its chief, Hiccup’s father, Stoick the Vast. However, when Hiccup is included in Dragon Training with the other viking teens, he sees his chance to prove he has what it takes to be a fighter. After he entangles a dragon with a bolas-shooting cannon, Hiccup releases and ends up befriending the dragon, who he dubs Toothless. This relationship flips his world upside down as he strives to convince his tribe that they don’t need to be dragon-slayers. via – wikipedia

It’s the 21st century, but the gods of Mount Olympus and assorted monsters have walked out of the pages of high school student Percy Jackson’s Greek mythology texts and into his life. And they’re not happy: Zeus’ lightning bolt has been stolen, and Percy is the prime suspect. Even more troubling is the sudden disappearance of Percy’s mother. As Percy adapts to his newly discovered status as a demi-god (his father is Poseidon), he finds himself caught between the battling titans of Mt. Olympus. He and his friends embark on a cross-country adventure to catch the true lightning thief, save Percy’s mom, and unravel a mystery more powerful than the gods themselves. ~ ComingSoon.net

I love all of these posters. This campaign had such a good use of color and mythology to play with. Despite the majority of the pallete being blue, I don’t feel overwhelmed by the color. The great use of yellow and orange in the backgrounds of some posters really created a good contrast between light and dark

A group of intrepid humans attempts to save the Earth from vicious extraterrestrials in this extremely popular science-fiction adventure. Borrowing liberally from War of the Worlds, Aliens, and every sci-fi invasion film inbetween, director Roland Emmerich and producer and co-writer Dean Devlin present a visually slick, fast-paced adventure filled with expensive special effects and large-scale action sequences. The story begins with the approach of a series of massive spaceships, which many on Earth greet with open arms, looking forward to the first contact with alien life. Unfortunately, these extraterrestrials have not come in peace, and they unleash powerful weapons that destroy most of the world’s major cities. Thrown into chaos, the survivors struggle to band together and put up a last-ditch resistance in order to save the human race. As this is a Hollywood film, this effort is led by a group of scrappy Americans, including a computer genius who had foreseen the alien’s evil intent (Jeff Goldblum), a hot-shot jet pilot (Will Smith), and the President of the United States (Bill Pullman). While some critics objected to the film’s lack of originality and lapses in logic, the combination of grand visual spectacle and crowd-pleasing storytelling proved irresistible to audiences, resulting in an international smash hit. ~ Allmovie.com

I think my favorite is the first domestic one; the most common one. It’s got good color contrast and a big open cityscape. The others are okay, but in the end I think they got it right.

A writer renowned for debunking infamous paranormal events is confronted by a force that he cannot explain upon checking into room 1408 of the notoriously haunted Dolphin Hotel. Mike Enslin (John Cusack) is an author who specializes in horror, but who only believes in what he can see with his eyes and touch with his hands. Having constructed an entire career on his ability to dispel superstitious “haunted house” rumors, Mike is convinced that the afterlife is a manmade construct designed to offer false comfort to the weak minded. Mike’s latest project is a book entitled “Ten Nights in Haunted Hotel Rooms,” and it seems that in room 1408 of the Dolphin Hotel, this skeptical scribe may finally find proof of the supernatural. Implored by the hotel manager (Samuel L. Jackson) not to enter room 1408, Mike defiantly procures the key and prepares to dispel yet another spectral sham. Now, as is the case with many of life’s most profound epiphanies, the writer who thought he knew it all is caught entirely off guard at the precise moment he least expected it. Subsequently faced with undeniable proof of an afterlife, Mike may have a best-seller on his hands if he can simply survive until sunrise. Mary McCormack and Jasmine Jessica Anthony co-star in director Mikael Håfström’s adaptation of an original short story by horror icon Stephen King. ~ Allmovie.com

These are really some creepy posters and everytime I see them I’m reminded about the movies premise. My favorite are the French and German international posters (the one with the beds and cracked wall and the white one with a red-like keyhole).

In honor of this weeks movie highlight I have choosen Daybreakers. Probably one of the strangest and most drastic difference from teaser to final product, when it comes to the posters, Daybreakers looks to be an awesome film.

Check back later tonight for a double review by authors Rose and myself.

International Poster

In 2019, a major viral outburst transformed a majority of the world’s population into vampires 10 years before the start of the movie. With only a handful of humans left to provide blood for the starving population of vampires, extinction is a very real risk for the new dominant species of humanity.

These vampires are depicted as being immortal, and possessing similar physical appearances as regular humans. Vampires are depicted as having yellow tinted irises and pale skin. They also have most of the ‘classic’ vampiric traits; lack of a reflection, fangs, vulnerability to sunlight and stakes through the heart. They also have no pulse.

In response to the dwindling blood supply, the vampires seek to hunt and farm the remaining humans for their blood and to find a blood substitute to prolong their existence. If a vampire doesn’t drink blood, then they will transform from having a recognizable human form into a violent, uncontrollable, and bat-like creature of the night. A secret team of human and ‘cured’ researchers try to uncover a way that would rescue the human race.

At the same time, small factions of surviving humans wish to repopulate the species, often using violent means to retain their humanity. ~ wikipedia

When I first saw the teaser poster (the red one) I immediately thought 28 Days Later. It was only later that I found out wat this film truely was. Just looking at the first two posters, it’s as if they fired the whole team and made a new one. Perhaps they were tired of copying the 28 Days Later theory or maybe it’s because Daybreakers is not a zombie-like film.

I really like the billboard poster because we see the characters, unlike all the international ones. The juxtaposition of Ethan Hawke between Dafoe (light) and Neill (dark).
